i feel like this is dependent on fandom and fic genre. a poetic summary can often tell me what type of fic I'm getting, which is the point i suppose.

Fic titles, fic summaries, tagging, even author names - those often tell me way more about what a fic is actually going to be like indirectly than they do through explicitly summarizing what the fic is about

Eh, I need a bit more than that. Like...3 sentences.

That's how I do fic synopses. But I write very short fic, so writing a long summary just seems silly. Short fic isn't everybody's bag but a few people read my stuff despite my bad summaries.

I reserve the right to be pretentious and annoying.

Both of those ways sound terrible to me. I much prefer a few quick lines similar to every other kind of literary synopsis.

1,000,000 fic summaries on AO3 that are all "The one where Character A and Character B have sex."

(Anonymous) 2023-10-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I feel it's so overdone.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-26 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It is accurate though
That is the sole level of plot 90% of AO3 fics have. They are all set up for the fucking, and only the fucking. Don't hate the accurate summary, hate the paucity of storytelling.

I agree 100%

Whatever.

If it's that, it's fine.
If it's a snippet of the fic, it's fine.
If it's a relevant line from a poem, it's fine (if maybe a little pretentious).
If it's like the back of a Harlequin romance paperback, it's fine (this kind of amuses me, ironic or not).
If it's a list of things included in the fic, it's fine (but weird if they are also all tagged).
If it's like a movie poster tagline, it's fine (this can be intriguing, though not usually very informative).

As long as it doesn't say 'I suck at summaries, just read', I'll take it.

As long as it tells me fucking something!

I tend to steer clear away from Friends-like titled fics. From the titles alone I associate Friends-related stuff to be shallow and cliche (ftr I'm a fan of Friends but am aware of the problematic shit, don't look back on the show with as much rose tinted glasses as my friends, who are still big fans of the show).

Fully aware I'm likely misjudging good fics but my eyes immediately glaze over when I see a title start with "The One Where..."

There is one fiction author I LOVE but all his titles are song lyrics that mean nothing to me. So I have to think of them as "the one with werewolves" and "the one where they're extra fucked up" yo keep them straight.
