Nah. Not gonna do any of that. Nope.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-26 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
a little too unbelievable, 2/5

I honestly don't know why they didn't just make TV Louis into his own character. Like... then you can do whatever you want instead of having to shoehorn in a character into another character and try to make it fit. This is pretty much the same regurgetation about recasting James Bond instead of creating completely different spy movies, yadda yadda.

Also still not over Louis having a brother who he pulls a knife on three seconds into introducing him, claims he's the most important person in his life and then his brother just offs himself 'crazy person doing crazy things' reasons. I know its based on Anne Rice novels and keeping up with some bad story telling, but come on.

Exactly - vampire chronicles series?!

There's a whole Vampire Chronicles universe. Just have Lestat meet this much later in time black character instead of changing Louis.

We're in an age of a weird form of tokenization.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
+100

It's everywhere now.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sometimes, but I don't think this is one of those cases.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I was honestly willing to give the changes a chance because I don't give a shit about Anne Rice canon but I saw a bit of it posted on tumblr and the way they talk about race and sexuality is just so jarringly anachronistic... I knew better than to expect a well-researched historical drama with this, but only watch if you want modern politics in cosplay.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I explained it to myself as Louis narrating the story from this century and changing it to suit, which helped.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Modern politics in cosplay" is a lot of historical fiction, on purpose or accidentally, but you probably only notice or care when it's about race, gender, or sexuality and not like, war or some shit.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
"How dare they leave out the dysentery and pubic lice! Doesn't anyone care about accuracy anymore?" Those people exist, but I personally am fine with fewer body lice and open sores (and less rape) and so on when I'm watching a fun fantasy show.

And man, I don't even go here, but "Anne Rice vampire novel" =/= historical accuracy.

I have my share of "historical" hangups about fantasy shit and I could see how the show writers not actually thinking about how changing Louis from a white to a black dude might lead to lazy writing or giant plotholes or whatever, but also the vitriol aimed at raceblind or deliberately racebent casting is so often nastily ott...

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
For some characters, changing their race wouldn't change anything else about them.

For some characters, it can be more interesting and have additional layers added to them if their race is changed in a way that fits something that was already part of them in with how they would navigate it along with their race in accordance with attitudes and relations of the setting.

Both of these are true, and saying both at different times is not hypocrisy. Not all characters are the same. It depends on the character and how much race is relevant to them initially and in the setting they live in.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly!
OP saying it like they found out some epic hypocrisy, but it's not.

LOL The ways people get so angry at the reverse white washing.

It's another flavor of the people who said that - for example - Aang in the live action Avatar film had to be white because "Most people in Hollywood are white anyway" and/or "Asian led films don't make any money anyway" and/or "the majority white audiences can't connect to a lead who isn't white also".

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
you can't be racist against whites in any kind of meaningful way, hope this helps

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Except that's bullshit in at least half of the countries in the world (where white people are not the majority). Hope you get over your western centric echo chamber views someday.

If a job is only open to whites you're discriminating on skin color. If a job is only open to non-whites then you're discriminating on skin color. It's all racism.

What bothered me about this race swap is that original Louis was so deliciously hypocritical with all his "oh my, the angst because I have to exploit/destroy the lives of humans to survive as a vampire" while being a slave owner.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He is brothel owner though. So he still exploits and destroys human lives but in a different way. So it's still delicious thing but with an interesting sexism twist.

Both can be true.

It's fine to re-imagine/reinterpret characters in any way you want to.

AND

Certain viewpoints in certain places and times and situations are under-explored and therefor more interesting to some people.

I haven't watched IWAV but Vampire = leech on society that feeds on humans considered lesser = nobility = slave owner *tracks* and a black and/or mixed race slave owner feels like it could have thematic ties to a young vampire with a lot of qualms about the vampire lifestyle (deathstyle?). Also very New Orleans. Stay different NOLA.
