I'm thrown out of immersion when there's a pause and someone says, "Well this is awkward."
*cue 30 seconds to 2 minute improv back and forth bantering before going back to the story*

Just...I don't need a character shouting out the plot or pointing out a thing within the universe to let the audience know they're in on the joke too.

i like meta commentary in stuff, but i think the impulse to do it has worsened writing skills, and i think requiring writers to stay in the moment would actually help.

My attitude is that if you don’t want to write something, then write something else. If you feel like it’s silly to have fantasy characters fighting dragons, have realistic characters fighting tanks. If you don’t feel comfortable doing a romance between a human and an angel, have a romance between two humans with very different levels of self-esteem. Writing something while making fun of yourself for writing it doesn’t seem like it’s good for anyone.

I think it's more self-protective irony than that they don't actually want to write the thing. They know some people find it silly, or lame, and they figure those folks won't mock them if they mock themselves first.

And you know, it's more than garden variety insecurity - it's a whole cultural milieu. Genuinely enjoying something, without irony and self-deprecation, is uncool and borderline socially unacceptable. You're supposed to consume and create content almost compulsively, and yet also appear above it all.

This was supposedly killed off by that “New Sincerity” movement after adults started unironically liking My Little Pony. That sure didn’t last long.

As with so many things, Bronies ruined sincerity for the rest of us.

Opposite of what I meant. Brownies were completely sincere, and “New Sincerity” was supposed to replace all the winking, and it ended up being a wet fart.

Oh, I'm not denying that Bronies were sincere. I'm joking that, because it was Bronies who were the face of sincerity, everyone else was like, "...think I'll keep being ironic."

oh piss off.

I haven't watched Marvel films recently - are they still doing this stuff?

On the whole I think it *is* dying out. People are fighting the last war.

To me Marvel's problem is the glibness with which they handle everything. No matter the stakes, personal or plot, it never feels like there is going to be any real sort of struggle or loss. I just want them to feel like the situation matters.

I love it in Deadpool movies because this has been a thing in DP comics since the beginning. But I hate it in anything else.
