Lmao I love this secret so much. The idea of someone not understanding why they didn't feel nostalgia from tasting something they'd never tasted before sends a delightful tickle up the funny bone.

All I can do is LOL!

Thank you for sharing this little nugget of ridiculousness

That's hilarious.

Lol Thanks for the laugh, OP!

Judging from "downvote" sounds like reddit. Yeeeah, they do have absolutely brain dead people in places there you never expect them.
(also Turkish Delight is awesome)

Yeah, I don't get the reactions to turkish delight at all - the stuff is delicious! What exactly are they expecting? What is it they dislike?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not used to sweets not infused withHigh Fructose Corn Syrup?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who had that traditional reaction.... I didn't have a very specific expectation. If you have no idea what Turkish Delight is (I didn't) there isn't a lot to go on:

*Each piece was sweet and light to the very centre and Edmund had never tasted anything more delicious.*

'Light' is not a word I'd use to describe it- when I finally tried it I found the heaviness of the texture unpleasant, I guess I sort of didn't expect it to be so sticky? And it didn't really have a taste other than sweet. Which I suppose, fair, they're not really promising anything other than sweetness, but it's a degree of sweetness I found unpleasant, not delicious. I didn't want to eat a whole box, I don't think I even wanted a whole piece.

If you get really good Turkish delight, like, fresh in Turkey, it is light - it literally melts in your mouth. And traditional turkish delight would usually be flavored with rose, I believe.

I think what I had was supposed to be rose flavored, but it didn't really come through. It was just sugar, sugar, sugar. I actually like floral flavorings, but I don't like things as sweet as this was.

Certainly it's likely that what I had was not high quality, but I suspect that most Americans who have the disappointment reaction are not having high-quality fresh Turkish Delight in Turkey the first time they taste it. If someone insisted I'd probably try it again but I don't think I'd like it, even if it was better quality. I just don't like things that are so sweet.

For chunks of rose-flavored jelly rolled in sugar, they’re not bad. They’re just not “betray your family and help murder God” good.

Lol what a dumbass.

I think I'll go buy some madeleines later though. Not just for nostalgia but because they're delicious.
