I guess it depends on what media it is that they're rec'ing. Like, are they sending you straight up gay porn, or are they rec'ing media that happens to have a lot of sex in it? Some of the really seminal queer shows have a lot of sex in them, but that's partially because part of the point was to present same-sex desire and sexuality, which has long been considered "deviant," in a positive light.

+1

Sex is a significant part of the queer experience for many people, maybe most people. It's also a very stigmatized part. There are reasons many queer stories feature sex as a central element.

At the same time explicit stories are not for everyone and straight up gay porn is not where I look for a queer story. Some erotic art is very explicit and very complex but still, not everyone's thing. So if OP is getting recs that are 100% focused on erotic elements I can see why they would be frustrated.

I'm willing to bet it's the latter and OP is a kid who thinks sex is icky and anything with sex in it is porn.

Meanwhile, as early as my first year of high school, I was assigned books for English class that had straight sex scenes (or sometimes even rape) in them. Sex is common in media, period.

As someone who's asked for queer stuff and been recced like BL sex games, nah, it happens.

nayrt

This is a big assumption to make when they referenced NSFW games and comics, of which there are several porny examples. Let's be real, they could very well be referring to getting recced PWP works. There's nothing wrong with smutty goodness for the sake of smutty goodness but if that's not to their taste that doesn't necessarily mean they would look down on a story that included explicit sex scenes alongside heavy plot.

Anyway, is it truly childish to not be interested in explicit sex scenes? Some people just don't care for it on a personal level without it being a value judgement. I think this response went a bit far.

pretty sure OP knows porn from not-porn. just the other day a friend and I were discussing some sort of representation discourse and I mocked the people who rec nothing but Nu:Carnival and other gay mobages and their response was along the lines of "but it counts?" Technically, yes, they're gay, but I'm not playing a mobage where the point is to collect all the terribly-drawn sex scenes to have genuinely gay characters, so also No.

Comics, webcomics especially, and games are rife with the only gay characters with developed storylines being showcased in porn format. Naturally, since in 2023 we have tons of creators who know they can get away with slapping some complex character development in their porn games because no one is going to stop them from developing their characters, but in the end it's still a porn game. It's a feature, not a bug. The porn comes first and the character dev or storyline is attached to it.

Anon above that got recced BL - LOL Nu:Carnival is one of the ones people keep telling me to play "if you're into gay" so I believe this

100% not what I'd be looking for if I was OP and wanted a story with gay characters in it

Some people classify anything with explicit sex as porn.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the porn OP is being recced is the type where characters' main traits are they have names and have sex (to quote them and their actual example), it sounds a lot more like Nu:Carnival type smut and not long epic adventures with a sex scene in it

It's like we didn't read the same secret or something

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
But some people really do think that a show like 'Queer As Folk' is just smut.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see what that fact has to do with the topic at hand, when QaF is very clearly full of characters that have personalities beyond sex

It also depends a lot on what OP means when they say they want queer characters. Like, are they looking for characters where queerness is an integral part of the character/narrative, or just a character who is canonically queer? Because there's a pretty big difference between the two things.
