It's easy to say in hindsight that the writers weren't smart enough to write a detective show and that it was clear from the beginning, but when the first few episodes were all there was, the show was all the rage among the most intelligent people I know (and it had nothing to do with Johnlock, they probably weren't even aware of Johnlock, they just liked the plot). Nobody anywhere was calling it "not smart."

To be honest I thought the show was not very good from the beginning and was confused by all the hype. I felt like I was missing something when I watched it and didn't enjoy it... I guess it was just not for me, clearly a lot of people were big fans, especially in the start.

I was calling it "not smart" and "annoying" but I was definitely in a minority there - but not completely alone. There were quite a few people calling episode 2 "weirdly racist" though, and they were right, and that's where I stopped.

nayrt

That episode soured me on the show quite a bit.

I had to look up that episode because I'd forgotten and... oh yeah, THAT one. The whole Black Lotus gang thing was a weird callback to the Arthur Conan Doyle stories since he was notorious about using Asian cultures to spice up his stories, but, you know, that was in Victorian times and we should do better now. Only the show didn't do better and it was super yikes.

And it's not like there aren't Asian crime organisations they could have referenced but they did it in the most stereotypically racist way possible and... wow.

I thought it was promising, but hoped it'd get better as a detective show. It didn't. There were people who weren't that impressed by it, but we were drowned out by the people who thought it was hot stuff. IMO, Sherlock has always been a case of style over substance from episode one and that's before you get into any ship-related discussion.

I am so over people saying that they knew that this show was stupid. No, you didn't, you just didn't like it and good for you.
I wasn't watching (and liking!) Sherlock because I've thought it was so smart. I liked how it was paced, I liked modern take. It was a fun fucking show at its first episodes.

Glad you liked it, but no, I thought the show was stupid because it was very flashy, but not a very good detective series. I wanted to like it because I enjoyed the style and sometimes the humor, but Sherlock Holmes stories need to be written with smarts backing it up, and I cannot honestly say that was the case with the show.

But honestly, don't get bitter just because some people here didn't like it. Plenty of people think the same way you do, even despite how the show ended. You're still in the majority and always have been.

AYRT
Flashy was a feature not a bug for me. Also I am stupid, okay okay, not doing sarcastic sorry. But I've never considered original stories that clever. They are fun and I love them but they are not that smart that I need modern take to be super smart.

I am not bitter that people didn't like it. It's OK, it's just a show. Especially since I dropped it half way so I have no hill to die on. But I am annoyed by takes when people somehow think that they are superior for not liking something.

Well, I'm so annoyed by the take that if I can't enjoy stupid media, it's because I'm so arrogant.

Like. I would honestly love to have lower standards. There are so many shows out there with fun premises and good characters that I cannot sit through because the writing is just too clumsy and it ruins it for me. There are a few extremely dumb things that are so perfectly my shit (Dominion, Jupiter Ascending) that I can "turn my brain off" and just enjoy it, but I don't begrudge other people for saying that they're dumb. They are!

Anyway Sherlock was fun, if you're into that kind of snark. But it was also dumb. So dumb. I figured out the twist of the first episode about 40 minutes in (and no, I hadn't read the originals at that time), realized the writing was a hack job, and never even watched episode 2. Let people who were exasperated by an inescapable phenomenon for years feel a little vindicated without taking it personally, damn.

NAYRT but I'm sorry... you do kind of come off as arrogant here. Or at least pretentious.

I mean...when the obvious answer, (i.e. people coming from the airport who die in a completely different place are probably using a taxi, and it's the taxi driver) for the very first episode was something neither lead could think of for an hour, but is clearly the simplest explanation 15 minutes in? no I think it was easy to say at the time.
