I mean, it's probably because a lot of the media that is explicitly, unambiguously and unashamedly queer IS smutty stuff. Otherwise you tend to get a lot of "they're queer but it's basically just an offhand mention and doesn't affect their character at all."

Yeah, that's exactly how I see it.

I get that people want queer representation, though. There's no reason why characters can't mention their same sex partner and just be a gay detective or nurse or whatever in a procedural where the straight people aren't fucking anybody either.

Oh, sure. But if someone asks me for recs for stuff featuring queer characters, I'm generally going to assume that they're looking for more than just "character mentioned their same-sex partner a few times."

Then again some of the smutty stuff, like yaoi smut games, aren't really great examples of queer rep despite all the technically queer sex happening in them.

I'd put Glass Onion on my queer media rec list for sure...
