Fics to be read

(Anonymous) 2023-11-06 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
How do you handle fics you want to read? I add them to my Marked For Later but I've heard some people put them in their Bookmarks? Seems crazy to me.

Open tabs. If I put them in MFL or Bookmarks I forget they're there and never read them.

That is even crazier to me. I hate having more than one 4 tabs open at once.

If I think I'll get to it in the next day or so, I'll open a new tab. This doesn't always work. I've had fic sitting in open tabs for over a year before I got to them. Currently, my longest-running TBR tab is ~5 months.

If it's a longfic, WIP, or otherwise something I know I won't read soon, I use "Mark for Later." And then forget about most of them unless I'm reminded of something specifically, or running out of things to read, which rarely happens.

If it's something longer I think I'll want to read on the go, I'll paste the link into a Gmail draft so it's easy to find on my phone.

If it's a WIP I just subscribe and let my email remind me it's there.

I download them and add them to Calibre. I customize the cover with fandom, pairing, author, and why I saved it (this is the great college AU, haven’t read this, etc.)

As a writer, I really don't like it when people put fics they want to read in their bookmarks. It hits much harder to see someone whose user name you recognize un-bookmark a work and leave no kudos than it does to see them never interact with the work at all.

Exactly why I don't Bookmark unless I've read it, loved it, and want the world to know.

see, things like that make me grateful I got that adhd memory. I will never know if this happens.

Open tab if it's short and I'm planning to get back to it soon. Otherwise, MFL. I've heard people do the Bookmark thing, but Bookmarks are more of a rec list/comfort read list for me.

I add them to my browser bookmarks 'to read' folder, and delete them as I go. It's satisfying to see the folder shrink.

I can't trust tabs. What if they don't come back after a system restart, WHAT IF.

If you’re logged into AO3, anything you opened in a tab will be in your history. If you’re not logged in and the restart clears your cache then it’s lost to the sands of time.

Download them on my e-reader. Man I love AO3's download function.
