weight gain / weight kink

I mean, YKINMKATO, but I'm somehow amazed that not only is it a super popular thing but that in each fandom I'm currently into, fic writers seem to have magically reached a consensus and zoomed in on a (from my perspective) totally random character to do weight related kinky fic of. It's like... I guess I'd get it if there were some canon weight-related thing? But there's never any reason that I can see for the designated "weight-gain" character to have been chosen... Gotten surprised by it enough (both the untagged stuff and sometimes by missing a tag in a tag forest) that I now always add it to the X list no matter what I'm looking for.

(Sort of like... I dunno, feet aren't my thing, but I'd expect foot-fetish to be a huge deal in a fandom involving, say, characters who are dancers or whose costuming features shoes heavily. I just never thought there'd be **so much** content to filter out on weight-gain kink in fandoms as disparate as victorian detectives, Edwardian grumpy butlers, superheros, and aliens... all of whose canon incarnations are of average to slim build and for none of whom weight is ever a canon issue... baffled anon is baffled)

Resident weight gain kink anon here. Weight gain kink is basically a weird and very specific variation on D/s, which is why a lot of writers will agree on which character in a relationship should gain weight. So you can think of it more as a preference like topping/bottoming.

And though it can spark an interest from writers, a character being fat to begin is very much not prerequisite for being the focus of a weight gain sorry. Like any other popular character in fanfic, it's down to whether the character is interesting, attractive, and/or in a ship with a dynamic that is interesting or attractive to the author.

Thanks so much for answering (if you see this, I'm late on my replaying) - I didn't think of the dom/sub angle but ... yeah, that totally jives with the character constelations I've seen it with. That makes SO MUCH MORE sense. The first time I came across it it there was such a flood for the same character that I was very very confused and wondered if he'd recently gained weight for a different role or something... Thanks for making the world make a little more sense to me. <3
