Book/gift recs for 16-year-old

(Anonymous) 2023-11-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Looking for book recs (or otherwise good gifts) for a 16-year-old boy. He's smart, shy, OCD, autism spectrum, social anxiety, struggling with toxic masculinity at school and *maybe* questioning his sexuality.

TIA!

Not sure if the Percy Jackson series skews too young for this? But maybe it would be a good fit.

I've heard that series compared to the Mistborn trilogy if he is at a higher reading level.

Thank you both! He has read Percy Jackson, but I will check out Mistborn.

Idk if this is helpful but I know from experience that when it comes to autism spectrum sometimes a person can have a high reading level but still have a younger maturity level.

I could read stuff written by adults for adults at 12 but I didn't understand large parts of it relating to adult subjects because for a long time there was a sizable gap between my physical age and mental maturity.

I'd say go with what OP has said about them I guess. I was just pointing out that for some there could be a slight disparity between what an autistic kid could read based on reading level and their mental maturity.

But I apologize if I'm butting in here. Sorry

Lockwood and Co. series by Jonathon Stroud is pretty good and where the teen characters are saddled with big responsibilities and struggle to reconcile what society expects out of them and their resentment and mistrust in society. It had a one season Netflix adaptation which was enjoyable but a bit different.

It's been a while since I read them but Bartimaeus series by the same author. About a smart main character in a warped society, makes bad choices to fit in and becomes something of an antagonist to new main character, and at the end of his story, realizes that's not who he wants to be. It's a bittersweet ending though so he may not want it.
