I mean, giving a passing nod to not being ok with Hamas killing Israeli civilians either in your very long condemnation of Israel is enough to get you labelled "pro-Israel" now, so you're gonna have to be more specific.

And on the other hand, daring to criticize Israel at all is enough to get you labelled anti-Semitic.

Both sides talk past each other on this issue, honestly. The reality is probably somewhere closer to the center. There certainly are a lot of shades of gray. But this is an issue that inflames everyone, and there doesn't seem to be a way to have a rational discussion about it.

People like having a bright dividing line between Good and Evil, and shy away from anything that suggests it might not be so clear cut.

NAYRT
I’ve been shocked and saddened by how many people I respected that do not know the difference between anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic :(

And criticising Hamas gets you called anti-Muslim. Both side are playing that game. People have been attacked at protests for carrying signs that even mildly criticise Hamas.
And yeah, when you have no issue marching/protesting side by side with people who are waving ISIS flags about and calling for an eradication of ALL Jews, you kinda are antisemitic by association.

THIS. 100%. They literally defend and love Hamas' murderous actions.

The way some people approach Hamas is absolutely bonkers. This is an extremist group that persecutes queer people, women, and non-Muslims within its own population, and that wants to establish a global caliphate. How can anyone who claims to stand against oppression support them?

Someone else said somewhere in this thread that there's probably no hope unless Likud and Hamas both go, and that's absolutely true. One can and should be against both Israel's hard-line government and Hamas.

I've yet to see anyone in the western world defend Hamas. I've seen some people that look at the history of Palestine and explain how this was always going to happen at some point and how it's a natural reaction to Israeli occupation, but that's not a defense of Hamas. I've seen plenty of Pro-Palestinian protests, but not a one said anything about Hamas. I have, however, seen plenty a news report equate the two, which.... no.

Its great for you that you haven't seen it. I have seen plenty, including people getting physically assaulted for carrying signs that mildly criticise Hamas at protests. In this very comm people have said "oh they just HAD to murder all those people, Israel totally forced them to uwu".

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen people defend Hamas and characterize them as freedom fighters. Some of them have been here.

But beyond that, this stuff that "was always going to happen and is a natural reaction" is stuff that's been carried out by Hamas, not by the Palestinian people more broadly. The equation of the two may be happening in the news, but it is also absolutely happening among pro-Palestinian commentators, who seem unable or unwilling to acknowledge that it wasn't your average everyday ordinary Palestinian storming the beach on Oct 7.

This person’s posts have been of the “Israel has done nothing wrong ever and deserves that land, and all Palestinians should leave or die” ilk, so I think calling them “pro-Israel” is apt. 😬
