Re: What are you reading?
(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)I'm reading Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy. It's all about the opioid epidemic from the early aughts to the late 2010's. It's informative and emotional and neat. The shit she's talking about is horrific (I keep meaning to get some Narcan for my first aid kit...) and I appreciate how the author talks about things from all kinds of perspectives. From the doctors to the sales reps to the patients to addicts to the families of addicts to recovery health care workers to drug dealers to lawyers suing Purdue to the cops to the feds to economists. And I'm not even done yet.
I know everyone has stories and feelings about this issue but it's very dear to me because my beloved has a chronic pain issue. He easily could have been prescribed one of these drugs as it cropped up in the early 2010's. Luckily we live in a state where CBD was legal. Eventually. We've taken quite a financial hit because he couldn't pass a drug test for certain jobs but I look at the 56% addiction rate for treating chronic pain with these drugs and I thank my lucky stars.
Once I'm done I think there's a follow up book by the same author. So that's neat!
