Knowing nothing about doll collecting, this seems backwards to me. Having collector dolls or marketing to collectors seems more like a cash grab to me. It's inherent in the idea that you have to buy them all to be a collector. There's no expectation that the kid is going to get them all.

THIS. Kids just want a doll of their favorite character to play with! And they'll probably play with it until it literally comes apart, too.

You're right in one sense, but there is a lot of complexity in the industry of marketing toys. This secret is just about adult collectors who focus on playline dolls, like LOL OMG, Rainbow High, Monster High, and MLP toys to name a few. A frequent subject that comes up in the fandom of these toys (some of which I collect) are complaints about marketing decisions focused on appealing to younger kids, saying the brands should be more collector-focused, which I personally see as silly and entitled, since while we are free to enjoy the toys, they weren't made with us in mind.
