Re: Titles/names that bug you

I have a very petty dislike for manga/anime/light novels with question titles - mainly 'Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?'

Just every time I see it on the shelf at the book store, my brain goes 'Yeah' and it bugs me.

I'm really trying to figure out why those sorts of titles became such a thing because it makes your work almost entirely indistinguishable from everything else with a title like that.

As I've heard it told, it's because light novels are sold (in Japan) where commuters can easily grab them for a short, stupid read on the train. They don't have time to stop and read an actual back-of-book summary or find where in the inside cover the summary is hiding, the titles serve as literal summaries of what happens in this book. Fast scan the title, sounds good/not, grab and go. I'm not sure how true it is but it makes sense. Even if the explanation is just using the title to save having to write any sort of interest-piquing blurb for whatever reason.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm a bit surprised we haven't seen something similar for books sold in places like airports in the United States.

That title doesn't bug me because it's actually a question, as in, it sounds like it's asking for an answer. I do hate how so many titles of anime and even episode titles in anime that aren't based on light novels are just crazy sentences with a question mark for emphasis like "I Got Reincarnated As a Vending Machine?!"
