Re: Titles/names that bug you

I hate being refereed to as "Miss". "Miss First Name" or "Miss Last Name" are fine. "Ma'am" or just "excuse me there, you" are fine. "Miss" just grates on me.

Oh.

Not that title/name.

Never mind.

Interesting! I much prefer “Miss” to “Ma’am”.

But I’m in my mid-30s and feel quite immature. So I wonder if that’ll change with time and/or a sense of more maturity.

"Miss" with a first name attached is an affectionate authority figure, like a grade school teacher. "Miss" with a last name attached is a polite in a slightly more formal way, like a middle/high school teacher. Weirdly enough "Mrs." First Name feels weird, even if you are married.

"Miss" all by itself feels disrespectful. Like something a Robber Baron would shout at his maid when he realized he wanted a second round of brandy. Yeech.

And some people hate "Ma'am" because it makes them feel old but I feel like we start becoming "Ma'am's" around 13-18. But also? The worst folks are those who correct service workers on their title or means of address (::boosts up her chest:: "Do these look like ""Guys"" to you?!?!") so I keep it to myself. It won't actually do damage, and if I'm going to talk to someone for a while I can let them know how to address me by introducing myself.
