I am so mad for the actual citizens of Las Vegas. Their public roads are getting taken over for a race they are bared from looking at. Absolutely insane.

I'm torn between hoping it goes wonderfully (because I don't want anyone to get hurt and Vegas is going to need new revenue because slot machines are just big phones now) and hoping it crashes and burns and completely wipes out (metaphorically) because fuck this noise.

I was just telling my dad about this today! (He thinks F1 and NASCAR are the same thing)
I said someone was going to die and he assumed I was being hyperbolic, it took me ages to explain it to him. Someone is literally going to die and there was never any reason for this. It does make ne happy though that the suits are all shitting themselves because no one will buy tickets and all the hotels dropped their prices to the lowest ever and still no one will go 🤣

Can someone explain this or give me a google-able term? I am all for F1 races being run out of town (there's one in my home town for which they destroyed a public park) but I need more details!

Short Version: qualifying and the race will be taking place late at night local time, meaning it will be cold for an F1 race and the tyres and brakes work better at higher temperatures. Combined with very long, high speed straights and street circuits having barriers closer to track than usual, there is a higher chance of dangerous crashes.

Locals in Las Vegas don't like it because it shuts down part of the Strip and some side roads, and has for several months due to relaying the roads in preparation.

They also tried to make the owners/tenants of every building that can see the course pay for race tickets and we’re going to build statues lining the route to block anyone from seeing it if they didn’t pay. Obviously that didn’t work LOL

No, other night races usually start about 8pm local time, qualifying maybe 10pm. But, those translate pretty nicely for European viewers, Las Vegas would not. They want a night race so Las Vegas looks impressive all lit up, but can't put it any earlier because Europe is the main TV audience.
