How common is "author is open to hearing about dead batteries?"

(Anonymous) 2023-11-16 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I just came across this as a supposed thing, a code in the spirit of lemon (but less concise and more "I'd like a cheeseburger without the cheese") that supposedly means NSFW comments are welcome.

I am skeptical. I do not think this is at all common or well understood, except by maybe a handful of people with a very, very specific in-joke.

So, F!S: have you ever come across this phrase before? Would you'd say it's common, uncommon, rare, or virtually unheard of?

I have heard of it (the batteries that are dead are vibrator batteries) but I've never actually seen it in the wild.

AYRT

Oh! Thank you, anon! I could not for the life of me figure out how the phrase related to NSFW content. It all makes sense now.

Thank you again!

I've seen at least a couple authors use the tag. Though tbf, I tend to only read the top few tags if there's a large block of them on a fic, so the dead batteries tag may have been used by more authors than that and I just never noticed.

It wasn't an intuitive or self-explanatory tag for me--I had no idea what it meant until I asked on FFA.

I've never heard of it (though LOL "dead batteries" = NSFW, smut writers are creative with their turn of phrases XD).

IMO these things tend to be inside jokes between friends and eventually is picked up by others and shared around to other fandoms/spaces so...maybe this term is picking up in popularity?

I'd heard about "wank and tell" which I guess is the same thing! Dead batteries I'd much more creative though, lol!
