It's been a long time since I could enjoy media focused on teens or kids, to some extent even as a kid I always kind of preferred the adult characters in the stories and as an adult now I just find no interest in media about kids/teens. It's fine it exists, it's just not for me at all.

Same. I'm just not interested in the Kid Problems that come up. I remember when the change happened too. It was a high school show and a couple of the kids were protesting that they weren't reading a specific book in class and one girl admits that she's so passionate about saving books because she's going blind. I'm like, sorry you're going blind, but damn girl. Just read that book on your own time. Who gives a fuck?

But also? Kids act like kids and though I love real kids I am not interested in a fake kid's issues.

Thank goodness every single piece of art and media isn't dependent on my enjoyment.

You know, even as a teen I used to wonder where everyone’s parents were. It just seemed really weird to me.

I can still enjoy stuff aimed at kids and teens, but I just have to remind myself that I’m not the target audience.

Same! I like the latest Superman show (and a sad it was cancelled) but I get bored during the parts focused on the teens. It’s taken me most of this year to get through the second season because I’m not very motivated to watch if they’ve just had a lot of teen drama.

I don’t enjoy a lot of stuff marketed to young Americans, but that’s more a matter of style. Something that’s marketed to adults is fine with me even if it’s about someone younger, and sometimes I like something for younger audiences if the style impresses me. For instance, stuff not made in the U.S. often assumes kids are able to handle content that Americans consider inappropriate.

Tried watching Durarara!! but I hated whenever it wasn't focused on the adults. Why were these children having full on gang wars? Literally none of them had parents.

Tokyo really do be like that though. Japan is a whole is way more encouraging of kids doing things without their parents. Elementary schoolers ride the subway by themselves and everything.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-23 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
They do, but they go in groups and they are very much expected to be in particular places at particular times. They're not just wandering around Tokyo!

Yes but these kids are in having literal gang wars with death. And hospitalizations. And not once did I even see the hint of a parent. That city was just full of orphans I guess.

Japan has quite the number of unsupervised teens living alone in the bigger cities because they send their kids there for better education and it's cheaper/more practical to just rent a 1 room apartment for a kid instead of uprooting the whole family. And teenage gangs did (and likely do) exist/one of the main things about the Dollars was that it didn't start out as a gang but as an anonymous social media type thing that kind of took on a life of its own.

I'm gonna guess that OP is not Gen X, because our parents were always absent so that seems normal to us.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say. I grew up in the 80s and it was totally normal for us to go out without parental supervision and not be expected home until dinner. Our parents didn't keep constant tabs on us, it was just "be home for supper" and that was that. We didn't have cell phones or anything like that, either.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-22 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a difference between that and "every person in this grade are out at 2am every night being framed for murder."

(Anonymous) 2023-11-23 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm Gen X and I think the same as OP.

That's why you kill off the parents , duhhhhhh

JK. Sometimes I think it a little but sometimes I can get for the main audience that being free and away from parents can be wish fulfillment. I idealized boarding school and universities for this very reason.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a Willing Suspension of Disbelief thing for me. Some things have to be a little unrealistic to make the story work. And it's so normal in fiction I don't even notice it.

For something more people can probably get behind the the omission of, it's in the same category as "Why doesn't anyone ever go to the bathroom?" for me.

One of us, one of us

We all hit that age eventually.

I remember the exact moment: I was watching the first Karate Kid for the first time and instead of thinking, "if I were that kid" I thought "if I were that kid's mom". I don't even have children!

(Specifically I was thinking that if my kid ever got bullied like that there would be a mysterious murder spree against said bullies.)

I knew I hit that age when I went from wanting to date fictional characters to wanting to take care of them like a mom.

MM like... I can watch Stranger Things, because within the setting, it makes SENSE that some of these kids are allowed to run around unsupervised, and that *as a result* of things that have happened, some parents get more serious about knowing where their kids are even though free-range kids are the norm, even those who have one stay-at-home parent had a lot of freedom once they hit their tweens and teens.

But I couldn't watch a show about teens having crazy adventures with a modern setting because like... kids *can't* exist out in the world unsupervised! There's next to nowhere kids can hang out without a parent where someone won't call the cops about either neglect or hooliganism.

... what? Where are you getting that wild idea? I see unsupervised kids out and about all the time. Hell, I live just a few blocks from a school and a ton of the kids walk to and from school all by themselves.

I have less of an issue with older TV because the "teens" were typically over 18, but yeah. It's not even "why are your parents letting you stay out all night?" It's more "are all the adults really cool with putting the 14 year olds in charge of whatever this is?"

Still, I get that this is one of those things where the media isn't for me. When I was that age, I definitely wasn't fantasizing about parental consent and reasonable boundaries.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-23 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I can suspense my disbelief about parents, but am so bored of teen problems and teen stories. At this point I am even bored of stories about people in their 20s most of the time

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That is why I stopped watching anime.
