What are exceptions to the "don't be a dick" rule?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-24 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Assume "being a dick" includes all dickish actions, small and large. It encompasses shouting an insult all the way up to brutally killing someone.

Most people have exceptions for all dickish actions. What are yours?

Protection of children. I have thrown someone out of my house exactly once, for not backing off when a child said no.

This is a very good reason. I don't even think that qualifies as being a dick tbh. You're protecting someone vulnerable. I mean at most its dickish to someone hurting a vulnerable person but i care a little less about their feelings.

That isn't being a dick, it's enforcing a boundary, and helping a child enforce a boundary. Not dickish, I'd say.

That kid is going to remember that, for good reason, because you were an adult that stuck up for their boundaries. I love this, well done, anon!

Self defence/ defence of others' physical safety

Taking someone down a peg if they're being a real dick, especially to others

When I want someone to leave.

Just stop. Leave.

I don't think there are any, and the people who think there are just want an excuse to be a dick themselves.

Did you recently get thrown out of someone’s house after not respecting their kids’ boundaries?
