You think creeps in the music industry is a uniquely American thing? Oh boy, do I have news for you.

I guess they haven't heard of Johhny Kitagawa, Gary glitter or Ian Watkins.

I have not heard of any of those people! ...now debating if i want to google for curiosity sake or avoid the obvious bad info that will just make me sad/mad.

Ayrt

Johnny Kitagawa was notorious for preying on young men in the Japanese idol industry, and the other two are convicted child molesters/rapists from the UK.

DA

The Gary Glitter stuff is wild because of HOW LONG the case against him has been going on. And Watkins - I never followed his career, but I remember seeing an article about his case when it was in the news and it's...horrifying and incredibly disturbing. So is Gliter's history, for that matter.

So yeah. Heads up indeed if you do read up, you may need some brain bleach.

Yeah like the k-pop and j-pop industry is known for being pretty horrific.

Or even just the music industry? Every guy everywhere isn't a creep, but a few guys in every industry everywhere, yeah. You just mostly hear about those who have at least some notoriety (if they can't hush it up with money and fear, though even that tends to come out later).

powerful people in industries and their favorite talent have some common traits relevant to them gaining power: treating other people as disposable (and misogyny).

I think the music industry never had any system set in place to protect artists and performers from abuse or exploitation so it's always been rampant. I think in the US the music industry lucked out that file sharing fucked the system over so that the stories of fucked up abuse were forgotten/swept under the rug. Everyone became too busy trying to find new ways to make money in the system.

But with time, finally, we are bringing this fucked up system's history back into light.

I recall in the 1990s and 2000s VH1 would have Behind the Music or Top XX Moments That Shocked Rock and Roll type list shows and the ways stories about abuse and exploitation were presented so casually or in a sensationalized way that is just supposed to shock us but not go in deeper.
Like, "Yeah this rock star got his 16 YO groupie emancipated and he married her when she turned 18." And the takeaway was supposed to be like, "Isn't it wild that rock stars do wild things?!!"
And not like, you know, this 30-something YO man is grooming a bunch of teenagers.

I also didn't hear light of the rampant abuse in the 2000s emo/indie music scene between band members/artists grooming and abusing fans via MySpace or other 2000s socials until mid/late 2010s but I am not surprised at all that it happened and at such terrible degrees.

Entertainment functions on such a wide scale of accessibility that I think many of these peofessions make it easy for scumbags to gain power and abuse it.
