Whenever someone says that, it's always an excuse for why they hate female characters. "They're badly written."

I wish people could just be honest and admit they hate women and be done with it instead of trying to put all the blame on writers for not writing "good" female characters, especially when "good" is always some ridiculous standard that no one ever expects male characters to meet in order to be considered "good." No female character is ever "good" enough for these people, and they'll find every excuse possible to point out why all female characters are Bad, Actually.

Boy howdy, there sure are a lot of absolutes in that post.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry that I'm sick and tired of how normalized blatant misogyny is in fandom and how everyone wants to insist that it isn't actually misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
DA fucking amen, the excuses are just exhausting

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's the exact same shit every single time.

Boy howdy, there sure are a lot of absolutes in that post.

Female characters aren't women. Boy howdy, as you say, though, there sure are a lot of women who should be honest about hating WOMEN (who are real people) instead of trying to excuse it with "but they're all nasty bitches with boners for problematic male villains and who hate beautiful flawless lady characters!"

When you have people who seek out the fans of female characters in order to "explain" to them how awful those characters are, and how they should be focused on a particular male character instead; when they create usernames specifically to attack fans of female characters, and try to clutter up the tags used by those fans with insulting commentary; when they use gendered slurs against those fans; when they go after wlw and, again, "explain" to them how they should give male characters a chance...

When all of these things happen, you start to think it isn't merely a matter of them finding men attractive.

Yep. When you can't say that you like a female character without OTHER WOMEN feeling the need to inform you that she's a terrible character and you shouldn't like her and then they turn around to fawn all over male characters who are even more two-dimensional (but apparently that's okay when they're hot and/or have potential sexual tension with another man) and this happens in multiple completely different fandoms, there's definitely something deeper going on than just wanting to see two hot guys touch dicks.

When you can't say you don't like a female character without OTHER WOMEN feeling the need to inform you that you're a misogynist because you don't like her, and try to gate keep by demanding that you prove you like female characters and then tell you you're lying because they don't like that character because THEY think it's a badly written character (but apparently, you're an asshole when you mention in general that you don't like their fav female character) and this happens in multiple completely different fandoms, there's definitely something definitely wrong with the idea that the women in fandom aren't constantly told to be more performative for the benefit of others.

As a woman, it's fucking exhausting to have to hear constantly that female characters just mysteriously always suck more than male characters, every time. Love the strawman (strawwoman?) but this is a fandom website so yeah we're going to talk about fandom trends and fandom feelings.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Always" is an exaggeration that nobody is actually proposing, but yeah, it is true that as a pattern (for which there are of course exceptions, don't pretend anyone's speaking in absolutes) female characters are not written as well. This is not an insult to you as a woman, because you're not a character! Don't take it as one!

And the reason is hardly mYsTeRiOuS. Everyone has been saying loud and clear that the reason is misogyny. And that you and your fellow fans blame the wrong group for misogyny, the women who are insulted by the fictional characters meant to represent their gender, not the men who write them badly.

It's not hard to understand.

By the way, I solved this problem for myself by turning to book fandoms because the selection of female authors is much bigger than that of female writers and directors in visual media (again, whoo misogyny!). But not everyone has time or patience to read.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-29 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Is it your position that women cannot be misogynistic or have misogynistic attitudes that they've been socialized with?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU FUCKING THIS. It's so exhausting being castigated for not spending more time on characters I don't like because they happen to be female, and when I point out there there ARE one or two female characters I do like, I get told that I'm lying because those specific female characters (and only those, cause THEY'RE not misogynists, unlike me) are shit characters, so it CAN'T be that I like those characters, I just hate ALL WOMEN!!11!eleventy.

These people are so exhausting.

+1

I love being told that I, a woman married to a woman who has one male friend and the rest are female, who works on an entirely female team, and who spends most of my family time with my mother, am a misogynist because I don't spend my free time adoring the caricatures of women that are written by men.

Sorry honey, it turns out I actually hate all real women because I don't like the way the vast majority of fake women are written on tv. *eyeroll*

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, but are you an anti?

Part of the reason this discussion spiralled out of control because everyone thinks they're who's being talked about. But most people here seem to be talking about assholes in fandom, not folks who are just going about their business, liking and disliking things.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I'm a fandom old. SALS, Kinktomato, etc etc. I don't shit on female characters I don't like, and I don't shit on male characters I don't like (except maybe once on my personal blog if I really, really hate them or if someone specifically asks).

I just move on to things that I do like. But every time someone complains at a blog that the blogger only talk about the male characters, why don't people spend time and effort creating content for female characters that aren't popular, or a secret comes out that they wished there were better female characters, people come out of the woodwork to say that if you don't like more than one or two female characters you're a horrible misogynist. Like, no. Leave me to my fandom in peace and stop assigning value judgements to what people like AND DON'T LIKE in fiction.
