Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, maybe that's because when someone gave you a nice list of five titles, you immediately demanded that they tell you how to access those titles for free in your region (without even mentioning what region that is).
That was some prime goalpost-shifting there, from "who has the time, energy, and money to trawl through millions of TV shows and films in search of good female characters" to "even when I know where to find good female characters, I need somebody to walk me through the steps of accessing that media for free".
If you'd just been appreciative of the recs rather than combative and demanding, there's a good chance you'd have gotten more recs.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)No. The "where to find" is part of the time and effort and money part. It takes time and effort to find a piece of media that has a general consensus of well written female characters (though that's not always a guarantee), and even if that time and effort is saved by someone rec'ing them, you still have to find out where it lives between the hundreds of streaming services. And that assumes you have the money to have streaming services. Someone mentioned libraries, which assumes that all libraries have copies of all movies, which LOL. So, if you don't have the money and you don't have the platonic ideal of a library, you now have to put in the time and effort of finding an illegal copy that won't give you a virus. If it was so easy and quick to do, people would put links to them in with the rec. But people don't.
Because it takes time and effort. QED.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)That was not at all clear to me on reading your first comment--or, I'd guess, to most of the people upthread who subsequently argued with you about it. When you said it took time and money and energy to trawl through millions of titles, I could somewhat see where you were coming from, because it does take all three of those things to trawl through millions...or, you know, a less exaggeratedly high number...of titles.
But if you can't even put in the time and effort to track down where to find a mere handful of titles in your region (which you still haven't shared, btw, making it impossible for anyone to provide that info even if there were an unbelievably generous Good Samaritan in this thread willing to guide you through the process), and if the amount of money you're willing to spend isn't just "less than the amount it would cost to trawl through millions of titles" but in fact no money at all, then imo you shouldn't be asking for recs online. You're expecting far too much from reccers.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)I don't have a lot of time, money, or energy. I would like for well written female characters to be ubiquitous such that I don't have to shell out money for them, scour the internet for them, or subject myself to possible viruses for them. Because if I don't do all of that, I'm called a misogynist for complaining that the ones I can access are shit.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)And to forestall the likely next round of arguments, yes, you also mentioned in that comment that you wanted free access to all streaming services in the world, but given that your first comment mentioned needing to trawl through millions of TV shows and movies to find good female characters, you might perhaps see why the rest of us in this comment thread assumed that you just have a rather hyperbolic writing style.
Anyway, that's the last word from me, as it's almost my bedtime. Feel free to say more if you wish, but I'm unlikely to respond.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)"And when you point this out, some assholes will act as if you have a personal duty to spend the time, energy, and money to trawl through the millions of tv shows and movies to find good female characters, otherwise you're anti-woman."
The thrust of this sentence is not what is needed to find well written female characters. It's this part (I'll snip it out since you can't seem to find it): "some assholes will act as if you have a personal duty to spend the time, energy, and money."
If I say that the stuff that I can get that doesn't require time, energy, and money is bad, it's not part of my duty to PROVE that to you, or to pony up the aforementioned things to find the stuff you approve of or suffer being called names. Because even when I do get access to some more well regarded female characters, most of the time I still find them lacking, though much better than the dregs I have. And when I point out where they could be better, I'm called a misogynist and told to, YOU GUESSED IT, spend more time, energy, and money to watch this one is perfect, you should watch this one, oh these over here don't have that problem and if I don't agree, YOU GUESSED IT, I'm a misogynist again!
How bout everyone stop calling anyone misogynist just because they don't have the same experiences you do, mkay?
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)If you're constantly finding the vast majority of female characters lacking? Then yeah, I hate to say it, you probably are at least a little misogynistic.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)Obviously I'm not talking about the majority of female characters in ever in the world. It's the majority of female characters that are given as recommendations as being well written that I can access. Christ on a pogo stick.
As I said, much better than the dregs I usually get, but just because it's better doesn't mean it's good. If you all like female characters that are still less well rounded than their male counterparts in the SAME media, then more power to you. I prefer better characters, especially if I have to spend more time, energy, and spend money I don't really have in order to see them. And god forbid I don't spend all of that. Cause then I have to talk to you fucking people.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)You guys: Oh you're a misogynist.
Me: No? I just have access to really shitty media. It's a lot of effort and money to not only figure out what to watch but then also to figure out HOW to watch. I don't have the energy or the time. I wish the good writing were more pervasive.
You guys: Here, go watch these.
Me: Where?
You guys: Omg, just google it. It's not hard.
Me: If it's not hard, why can't you give me links? Cause I find it hard.
You guys: Oh you poor wooby misogynist, it's easy for us, therefore you're lying about it being hard for you. If you weren't a misogynist you would make the effort and spend all your money!
Me: You guys are dicks.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-29 06:47 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure why you're accusing me of being unable to read, when you responded to a couple of my comments with a comment of your own that doesn't actually address what I said in those two comments. This is feeling less like a discussion and more like an imaginary argument you're having with people who aren't me (and just downthread of this, an actual argument you're having with someone else). Which means it's definitely time for me to exit this conversation for good; ain't nobody got time for that sort of thing.
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)But hey, since I'm nice--and because I love these shows and films and want more people to see these recs--here's another 5+ recs for you. Though I'm not going to walk you through how to find them for free wherever it is you live either, sorry-not-sorry about that.
Hidden Figures
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
The Old Guard
Nobuta wo Produce
Russian Doll
Qualified bonus rec: Our Flag Means Death has a very male cast overall, especially when you're looking at the main characters. But I freaking adore most of the female supporting characters, especially Mary Bonnet (S1), Spanish Jackie (S1 & S2), and Anne Bonney (Episode 2x03). So if you're fine with a rec for good female supporting characters, then here you go.
