I also think it needs to be considered that different things work with different media: there are things you can do with a written work that you can't do with a visual one, and vice versa; and when it comes to visual media, TV show is going to work differently than a miniseries is going to work differently than a movie etc. That said! An adaptation absolutely can go too far in terms of what it changes, to the point that it loses something (or many things) that endeared fans to the original in the first place.
