I thought the idea wasn't that the world ended up just like ours despite having hidden magic that ours doesn't; it was that we're supposed to imagine it is our world and we just don't know about the hidden magic "in real life" (ie outside of the story) because, well, it's hidden from us.

I don't mean we're supposed to believe that for real of course, but part of the fantasy is giving us a world we could pretend is really hiding in the midst of ours.
