Frankly, that's fair. I don't understand why some parents take pleasure in publicly retelling experiences that greatly distressed their own child. Maybe it's because they don't think it's that big a deal but it definitely is a big deal to the person who experienced the thing.

Sorry for your loss too, even if it's been a few years.

Thank you. I suppose my mother did it because she never really understood how awful I felt about it at the time. I was a very closed-off, stoic kind of kid and tried not to get upset or cry where people could see me. (I still hate crying in front of other people, no matter what the reason.) To her, it was just funny that I made a big (though harmless) mistake in front of bunches of people. I never tried telling her how much I disliked her telling the same story again and again, because I knew she'd never understand and would likely just tell me it was no big deal and to get over it.

I think many adults really underestimate just how serious some things are from a child's perspective. They make the mistake of thinking that because it looks like no big deal in the long run, a child won't have any deep feelings about what happened. As an adult, I always try to never dismiss what upsets a child, even if it seems trivial to me. Just acknowledging their feelings seems to make a difference. I wish someone had done that for me when I was little.
