Did Prince go door-knocking to convert people or did I miss something? I don't think Prince being a Jehovah's Witness convinced many people to become one too.

Scientology seems worse as a religion.

And being a drug addict is worse than most religions, too. RIP Prince. Gone too soon.

He did in fact go door knocking. I think about this a lot, I always wonder what people’s reactions were. And I wonder how I would have handled it. I’m always super polite and just say, “No, thank you,” and the missionaries or whatever say ok and tell me to have a nice day. I think I’d geek out if I opened the door and Prince was standing there.

I would like a citation, if only so I can further amuse myself thinking of Prince at my door trying to hand me a Watchtower.

He'd be about the only Jehovah's Witness I'd welcome knocking at my door. I'd want him to come in and do some songs.

From some of the reporting by the Australian Broadcastting Company and accounts given by people who have left the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom, there are similarities between it and Scientology (covering up SA, real estate shenanigans, shunning practices). I'm inclined to say they're both terrible to the same degree.

I'm more weirded out that he took legal guardianship of a 16-year-old and then married and had a kid with her. Also not a huge fan of his music, but I don't want to say that and get my Minneapolis citizenship revoked.

Yeah, I inherited my dad's dislike of the man as a child and had to be mindful during my first few years up here. My stance has since softened a bit (but not all that much).

It's fucked up how often you hear of that kind of thing happening in the music industry. Is it really that hard to NOT be such a creeper?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would it get you shot in Minnesota?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
it wouldn't, but I'm guessing OP's hyperbole is aimed at the Twin Cities hotbeds of Lutheran and Catholic. But in the lapsed midwestern sense, nobody up here would do more than sniff and look askance at Prince for being one of them weird culty jesus fans, given that we all rocked out to his top 40 hits on the Casey Kasem countdown we listened to every Sunday after church.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I would guess it's because Prince is from Minneapolis.

I say this not entirely as hyperbole because Prince is revered in Minnesota. The Saturday after he died traffic in downtown Minneapolis was at a near standstill because hundreds of people flocked to the his on the exterior walls of First Avenue (the most famous live music venue in the area). Many skyscraper/building lights were changed to purple during that time as well. It was a big deal.

Prince is from Minneapolis.

Once you badmouth a Minnesotan celebrity, all that Minnesota niceness vanishes FAST.

Thank you, Secret Maker!

I still have a high opinion of his music. The man, not so much.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I would say most people just don't know all that much about Jehovah's Witnesses. He'd been one for some 15 years before his death, and I don't remember many people even really remarking on it, or if they did it was just a mention or one-liner joke about it.

And I hate to say it, but it's not the only religious denomination with sexual abuse issues (or shunning, or real estate chicanery).

(Anonymous) 2023-12-12 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't the only religion with those issues. That said, it's a bit more widespread geographically, and from a demographics standpoint it actually trumps Scientology (over 8 million Jehovah's Witnesses compared to less than 50,000 or so for Scientology). The average person is more likely to encounter a Jehovah's Witness than a Scientologist in many parts of the US.

On top of all that, their end of the world rhetoric gives such coverups an underappreciated sinister edge. I saw a fair amount of it from my cousin-in-law in the early stages of the pandemic. We were not super close before this, but I'm now regarded by her as an apostate. After that shunning, I started to dig around, and yeah. Jehovah's Witnesses set off a lot more alarm bells for me.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I believe he started off as a Seventh Day Adventist, who are honestly pretty similar in terms of cover-ups and abuse and cultiness, just not as into the apocalypse.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-12 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
He was an incredibly talented musician but what I admire most about him is the way he used his fame to help promote other artists, especially women.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-12 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, he's dead now so there isn't much point to getting worked up. I feel like there'd be more purchase in picking apart his music for problematic themes since it lives on.

(But maybe I'm biased because I can only name like 3 of his songs. Maybe. After listening to some 80's music.)

I have an old friend from middle school that became a JW and mildly evangelizes to me.
I have no friends and my family doesn't give a shit about me, so I put up with it online just to feel like somebody cares about me. :(
