Blue Sky

Anyone here have it? Thoughts? Is there a good fandom space there?

Apparently I signed up for it and forgot about it because today I got an invite code. So now I'm curious.

Isn't it supposed to function as a sort of almost-twitter? A big chunk of my fandom migrated there a while ago but it seems like it's still operating outside it just the same, as if they hadn't all massively given each other invite codes weeks ago. Not sure if that's something to take as a comment on bluesky itself or just a reflection of how absolutely disorganized and uninterested in setting up real communities my fandom really is, though... I'm curious to know what others might say about it here.

I've been using it for a few months and it scratches the twitter itch for me, but I never used twitter for participating in fandom. It doesn't have functioning hashtags or any kind of algorithm but it's possible for users to create feeds for literally anything (usually pulling in posts that feature a set of key words) that anyone else can follow.

I follow a few fandom feeds and that's worked pretty well for me. I haven't figured out how to CREATE a feed, because it requires some kind of coding? And maybe having somewhere to... host... something?

I used to follow book and comic publishers on twitter but the only one I've found on BlueSky so far is Dark Horse. And of course Neil Gaiman is there.

So right now there's just not enough There for it to really be a fandom hub, at least not for the fandoms I'm interested in, though I do hope that once it opens up a little more, some more people will migrate over? Maybe?

I haven't. (incoming side rant) I hate being on the internet sometimes, because of all the goddamn info it wants you to give it so it can sell it. But if you don't give it, then you don't connect to anybody. I don't want those to be my only two choices.

It's fine. It's basically a Twitter substitute. A lot of people I previously was mutuals with migrated over there, so I'm on there. I'm still on Twitter too. I think Bluesky is better overall but not enough people have moved over.

I’m sure it’s fine, but I’m tired. I don’t have any more usernames or passwords in me. I’m on Twitter until it gets nuked and then I’m done trying to keep up with any new social media.

Same here. I actually received a couple of invite codes by friends, but I never signed up.
I even don't log in much in either twitter or tumblr nowadays. I just... don't care any more.

Thats how Ive been feeling for years. No tumblr, no Twitter, the only thing I have is insta and I never use that anymore. I still don't want a twitter and I never really understood tumblr so don't want to go there but I do miss the social aspect of fandom so thought maybe bluesky would be a good way to go.

Re: Blue Sky

To be fair, if bluesky is like twitter then the social aspect of fandom is probably not going to be of very good quality anyway. It's what keeps me away from interacting with twitter fandom even while being there and it's why I actually refuse to go to bluesky even if someone were to magically offer an invite code. The way fans interact in sites built like that is just... Bad. Superficial. Boring. Tumblr might not be big on social interaction as concerns fandom, sadly, but I find it more enjoyable than the other two, which just don't seem to be structured *for* fandom anyway.

Tbqh THIS, Dreamwidth, is the place I wish all of fandom was like in the LJ days, but alas...

Not to be all "skill issue" but

Lol skill issues that affect thousands of users... Kind of annoying.

It's perfectly possible to find rewarding fandom communities on Twitter.

I'm glad that is your experience, truly. It definitely isn't mine.

ayrt I guess part of me is just living in the past and looking for what I had during LJ. When it all went down I never made the transition to a new fandom space, and basically just kind of walked away from fandom other than reading on ao3. I miss it.

No judging from here, I'm the same as you in wanting to find what was lost with LJ *hugs*

Tumblr certainly isn't it, but I really can't fathom how the way twitter or anything that works similarly to it ever could come close to the way things were built on LJ. The whole way the site works and presents things seems so antagonistic to *that* experience and the way people use it kind of proves it, at least imo. I just wish people would settle for something much fandom-friendlier than twitter or its copycats, tbh. I always complain about not being able to have a good discussion there and every time someone tries to prove me wrong they link me to a thread where nobody uses proper arguments and the actual subject gets lost and underdeveloped because of dumb misunderstandings created by the limited word count and that... Just proves *me* right. It seems impossible to have a *good* conversation conversation on twitter.

Anon back and forth HERE is ten times better than any conversation I've ever had or witnessed there.

I'd love to switch to it over Twitter personally, but I'm not at a point in my life where I can use public social media accounts (at least, where I say anything about my personal life) anymore, so until Blue Sky has that functionality, I can't.

Oh is it all public? I thought you had to have an account to see anything, and then I just assumed you could set it to private/friendsonly. Obviously I haven't looked too far into it.

Re: Blue Sky

Right now, the site is viewable by users only, and then within the site nothing is private.

They are going to flip the switch and make it publicly viewable very soon (iirc in the next few days). They're also going to allow people to opt out and make their accounts not viewable by people who aren't logged in. But you will still be visible to all logged in users.

AFAIK there is no date for when they're going to implement friends-only accounts.
