Eh, it's a character. Even if they're portrayed a certain way, you're not obligated to feel something for them one way or another. Some of my favorite fictional characters are cops. Hasn't made me buddy-buddy with cops IRL.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the insidious nature of propaganda has probably made you feel a little more sympathetic to them and likelier to oppose anything that hurts them in any way. You're gonna be a little more Laura Norder aligned than you would be before.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. When a cop fucks up in real life, I'm all for real consequences. It rarely happens so it's great to see.

A reminder that just because you might feel sympathy for someone else doesn't mean you condone their actions or are incapable of separating fiction from real life.

NAYRT
Ahahahaha lol no.
Maybe propaganda affects my belief that there should be some system in place. But somehow it's difficult to be in any way sympathetic to RL cops if they are fucking shit

Skill issue

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What propaganda is influencung you, anon?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
People are going to knee jerk because they hate to acknowledge the subconcious at play, but yeah.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think the subconscious has a role but not this exact role

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
"You are not immune to propaganda... only I am."

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'm sure some people are. But there ARE also people who have watched cop shows, or who watch some of them now, who ALSO put in the work to say, like... what does Law and Order want me to feel about cops, why do only bad guys ever ask for a lawyer, etc.

It's not that I think I'm special and immune to propaganda-- the fact that I know I'm not is why I try to view things critically. Sometimes I watch procedurals (there are a ton of them and I don't always control the remote in my house, though there are ones I find watchable and ones I find unwatchable in terms of just how heavily they lean into copaganda). In real life, I fully hate cops. I have loved ones who are uncritical viewers, I have loved ones who are VERY critical viewers, I think most people I know probably fall somewhere in the middle.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
But when people say "You're not immune to propaganda," what they mean is "There's a chance you'll fall for propaganda even if you do your best to view things critically, so you shouldn't view them at all. (But I can view them, because I'm immune.)"

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't view them, because I know I am not immune. The best I can do is try my best to be aware of when a show or genre has an agenda and an influence, and try to avoid it. And I don't think you should view them either.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But there really isn't anything that doesn't have an agenda or an influence.

The way to contend with propaganda isn't to avoid it entirely; it's to view media with a critical eye. And if there's an idea that you're afraid to be exposed to, then I would make the case that that's an indication your current set of views aren't as solid as you think they are.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that is what people mean

Athena is the exception that proves the rule.

Angela Bassett and Peter Krause are 100% why I watch this show.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
100%. Fucking adore them.

yall have got to stop personalizing social criticism. nobody should care whether you like a specific character. im not disagreeing that you've met people who do...just that that shouldn't be the main takeaway from copaganda. i love goren and eames and always will, but i was well aware that they were fantasy cops.

athena is great.

One of my favorite characters is a cop who gets away with excessive violence and canonically has brain patterns typically found in serial killers. Fave doesn’t mean they’re a good person.

McNulty?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I immediately thought of Jimmy McNulty from The Wire. That scene with the FBI profiler is probably my all-time favorite of the entire series.

Nah, she’s in an anime called ID: Invaded.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, people like fictional genocidal murderous villains all the time and they don't have to justify it. You can like a cop character too, AND be aware of propaganda and how they make part of it. You don’t deserve to get shit for it.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same boat. I love the actress, but the character abuses authority both for personal gain and for the greater good. Either way makes her untrustworthy as a cop.

I think the guilty feeling about liking these characters is that we all know cops in real life, and real cops can ruin real lives - yours, your family, your neighbors. Obviously no one is rooting for serial killers or other Bad Guys(tm) in real life, but cops just feel different.
