Corrupt, self-selected and self-serving? So Space CIA then, with the worst of their violence directed outwards only because the FBI was taking care of the domestic side?

Seriously, though, it worked (barely) in DS9 because it fit with the themes of war/violence causing corruption through desperate acts and we didn't see too much of them. DS9 confronted that theme head-on on several fronts (Garak and Sisko, the Bajoran resistance after the war, Kira and post-occupation Cardassians, O'Brien's hatred of Cardassians, Bashir hiding what his parents did to him and yet enjoying it, the whole storyline when DS9 was surrendered to the Dominion...) Section 31 wrigging around the edges of the whole conflict tempting people to do the wrong thing for the right reasons fit in. It did not work well in Discovery and I have no idea how a whole series would work.

Kinda OT but I only just learned today that creator of the original Frasier died on 9/11. He and his wife were in the first plane to hit the towers. I was a superfan of Wings (the show he did before Fraiser) and this news broke my heart a little more :(
