Threepenny Opera sounds grating and awful to me - I would rather listen to leafblowers and I hate leafblowers.

I'm not sure why, but in some golden age musicals, the female leads sometimes sing in this weird high-pitched wavering tone that's like an ice pick to my brain. It's very obviously trained, but I don't know why and I detest it.

That high-pitched wavering tone makes me think the person singing is about to cry, and it sets my animal-brain into panic, "Oh no, what do we do? What are we going to have to do if this person starts crying? D:" mode.
