EDIT: looking at the lyrics from my limited knowledge of the song from hearing it a few times I must have heard "stand me up" thought of a dating context and yeah.. I really misinterpreted. I'm sorry.

I can totally see how you misinterpreted that! It doesn’t help that a lot of Tom Petty’s hits from around that time are at least patronizing of women and some are downright creepy when looking through a modern lens.
