Downloading fanfiction

(Anonymous) 2023-12-27 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I had seen a comment a while ago how some people have downloaded fanfiction onto their kindle and have been toying with the idea of getting an old ebook of somekind so that I can read fics offline and have somewhere to store downloaded fics.

If you download fanfiction - do you just store it onto your computer/phone/ebook/etc? Or do you prefer to just go onto the fanfic site?

I download it to my tablet and then when I'm done reading it, I store it on my computer/external drive in case I want to reread. I have folders set up by fandom.

I often read on AO3 on my Kindle. But I do have a couple fics downloaded on to it, in case I'm offline or something is down. But I also save fics I really like on my laptop, in case they get deleted or AO3 goes down or whatever. I have an external hard drive I do a backup to every three months, so they're on there too.

I download them to my laptop in mobi format from AO3, then manually add them to Calibre. I use Calibre to generate a book cover that includes the author, fandom, and pairing. Sometimes I’ll add a line that tells me something about the fic. Then I just plug my kindle into my laptop, select all the downloaded fic, and click send to device.
Amazon just had their two cheapest Kindles for 50% off, sorry you missed it :( I’d check marketplace listings around you though because this is the time of year people sell their old ones because they got a newer one as a gift (usually for things like Prime Day they trade them in towards the cost of their new ones). Even full price, the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite are solid devices that will last several years. If you happen to get a dud (and it does happen), Amazon is great about exchanging it. Their customer service is so good that when I ordered one and registered it to my account just 14 months after replacing a Kindle I’d had for six years, they contacted me to see if there was a problem with the one from the year before. The stray dog we’d taken in had eaten it (and the case) and they refunded me for the one I’d just bought! I only had to pay for the new case and drop the eaten one off at the UPS Store as a free return.
(I’m obviously a huge Kindle geek lol)
I had a Sony e-reader first, then a Nook before switching to Kindle and I’ve never tried any others since then. The Kindles I can afford lack features I want and their UI can be annoying at times but I love the Kindle Store and I love Kindle Unlimited. I read 5-7 books a month so it’s worth it for me.

I use fanart as covers on Calibre. I also use fanfiction addon on it because I used to download from FFN too.
