Are you new around here? We do this every regeneration. Someone is gloating, someone is pissed, round and around we go. The only change this time is both sides are pissed, and both sides are gloating the other side is pissed. RTD finally united the fanbase.

Sadly always inevitable. I'm re-watching the entire lot for the first time in probably the best part of 20 years and honestly if FS had been around in the 60s, guarantee there would've been a bunch of stuff about how Two is a hobo-clown who isn't taking this as seriously and statesmanly as his predecessor. Some people were mad about Four for the couple of serials but pop culture history/his status as THE Doctor remembers him as perfect even though that wasn't always the case.

It's basically a show-long tradition that Doctor Who fans are angry about something forever and ever. And I've learned to accept it as part of the fandom even though sometimes I really can't be doing with it anymore.

The first fancomment in the first Doctor Who fanzine, on the first Doctor Who episode was probably "Verity Lambert is ruining Doctor Who".

Having witnessed how bored and frustrated many people got during the wilderness years, this is sadly not even that far-fetched as a comment!

Four's run is WILDLY imperfect, and that's just on a creative level / ignoring the glaring racism of some of his episodes.

You're not wrong about all of that. My husband hasn't done the whole run ever and I had to warn him about a few things in particular. I think because he was in the role for so long and Tom Baker is so beloved the nostalgia goggles obscure quite a lot.

At the same time Four's run has among it some of my favourite ever serials. As you say, wildly imperfect but also has some top level Doctor Who.

I watched all of Classic Who a few years ago and it just showed me that the show’s always been imperfect and something will eventually annoy me, but then something else will pleasantly surprise me and that’s enough for me to continue watching the show.

Same! But I don’t go near the fandom. Most of my friends watch so we all chat with each other about it. Fandom for me is squeeing and reading/writing fic so I just find the happy fans and share the excitement with them.
