So, your limit for fair wages for all the work put in to get an official translation that benefits an author you claim to like... is the artwork doesn't suit your specific taste??? Just admit you don't actually care about people being appropriately compensated and were going to pirate it anyway...

Why are you always so eager to be outraged over something? Come on, it is a New Year. Make your resolution to just be more chill and let stuff pass without comment.

Not the asshole!anon. Seriously. Point to the outrage. I'll wait.

The word your looking for is "incredulous". I'm incredulous that someone who claims to be for fair compensation to the author is put off by artwork they don't like. Artwork that they don't be looking at while they read. It's an excuse to make them feel less guilty about their pirating. Just own it, OP.

Kinda defeats the point of the comm, doesn't it?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao this is so dumb.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)

Let me get this straight. These pictures, which are part of the work, annoy you enough that you have decided to deny the creators financial support, but not enough to drop the work entirely?

Are you like, morally offended at the light novel format? Cause that is the weirdest hill to die on, I gotta say.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-01 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda get it, though. I dislike the official English edition artworks for Heaven Official's Blessing so I didn't buy the English version.

ayrt

Yeah, but you skipped it entirely, right? You didn't pirate it instead. So that makes sense. Pirating it instead would be confusing.

I read the fan translations before the official one was ever in the works but I tend to buy the originals of novels I liked a lot.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with the artworks in the English editions of HOB? I think they're nice...

(Anonymous) 2024-01-02 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's mainly that I know the artist from fandom and I think her art is okay as blandly cutesy anime style fanart but just too blandly cutesy anime style for official novel illustrations and some of the illustrations she did look rushed and like unfinished sketches.

There must be some way for you to disable pictures from displaying, right?

Yeah, you can block elements of pages using an ad blocker, and there's also web extensions for blocking out images.

the original secret shows the e-book open in Calibre, which means the secret maker can straight up delete the images from the file before exporting it to their e-reader of choice.

the art pages almost always have text on the back so there's no way to do that in a physical copy, though.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-01 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't understand why these edition just HAVE to have artworks/illustrations anyway. Especially in the English versions they're usually only on the level of very mediocre fanart (especially compared to, for example, several of the Asian editions where the illustrations are actually pretty gorgeous). They don't really add anything, only push up the price and in some cases don't even fit the text.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it was a marketing decision from the publisher. They could get "cheaper" art from artists not as experienced in publishing, and IIRC their early marketing for the first wave of translations built heavily on the fact they were using fan artists and fan translators.

Soooo you were planning to pirate it anyway and were just looking for a "moral" reason to excuse yourself, got it. It's not like there's only a handful of illustrations for an entire book and you literally only have to look at it when you're reading a single page.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, it's normal for literal porn manga to be full of cutesily-drawn panels in the bits that aren't porn and occasionally in the bits that are; if you have a 20-page sex scene not every panel needs to be deadly serious and sexy. This is nothing weird or new, you can just be glad that the story you want to read is in a text format where you can ignore any accompanying artwork you don't like.

what

(Anonymous) 2024-01-02 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
I for one have liked the art in all of the novels. They're not the reason WHY I buy them, but I rather have them than not.
And Idk what kind of illustrations people are used to in other books (not talking about graphic novels) but if you really think they're bad, you can just skip them? There are maybe 8 per book and can't be seen from the outside, so ????
