It was stylish enough, and not so up itself in a contemptuous of the audience way, that the poor writing didn't matter so much. If good writing mattered then Murder She Wrote wouldn't have ran for twelve fucking seasons of little old lady serial killing. And Diagnosis Murder got eight seasons. Good writing isn't everything, style and audience charm matters more.

Clearly it didn't charm you, but it charmed enough for a couple of seasons until the writers/producers started to play games with the audience instead of treating them like an actual audience.
