I think the Lost pilot was genuinely great. I'm not sure if anything could have lived up to it. I only watched the first season, up until I got tired of the answer-one-mystery/question-bring-up-five-more formula that seemed to be going on. But I do believe the writing of the pilot was on point.

In general though, yes. Sometimes the excitement of a new show and getting to know the characters can make you gloss over the weaknesses that are there from the beginning.
