Its not even that much of an original idea. Worst Witch beat her to it minus 'the chosen one' gimmick.

Anon, I really think you should listen to everyone who's told you that the concept of both books had been many times done before either series and accusing JK or copying The Worst Witch makes you look very naive. Do a Google search on books about schools for witchcraft if it helps.

there's literally the female version of snape in the worst witch school. Yes the concept of a magic school has been done before, and still better than JK Rowling who had dumb luck and timing of release on her side - and it still has so many similarities to the Worst Witch minus the racism.

It even has the rich/popular/legacy student bully (though at least in The Worst Witch she eventually improves), and that relationship hits a lot of the same beats. Including 'bully gets publicly embarrassed after being turned into an animal' (admittedly HOW this happens is very different).

Not the above anon, I'm just saying, The Worst Witch doesn't come up because it's the ONLY book series HP is a lot like, but it does come up because some of the similarities are big, easy to point to ones, and I imagine it also comes up because the netflix adaptation has brought new attention to the books.

You're not making your case any better; rich popular bullies literally appear as a major rival in every book/show/movie set in any kind of school.

I never read The Worst Witch books. But I have read a lot of late Victorian and Edwardian school stories. And everything to do with the school setting in Harry Potter is absolutely RIGHT in line with tropes from that era. So I think it's probably a case where both Harry Potter and Worst Witch are ripping off the same archetype.
