AU tagging question

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Would you say that Zombie AU is the same as a post-apocalyptic AU?

Also - for discussion fun - What are your favorite AUs in fanfiction?

Yes. Though, I'd tag both.

I love mob/mafia. And sugar daddy. Usually combined, lol. I like Modern AUs for some fandoms.

I would say a Zombie AU is a type of post-apocalyptic AU. There are many different causes of an apocalypse, and zombies are only one of them.

Magic AU/superhero AU/scifi AU in mundane fandoms. Other than that, I stick to AUs that involve changing one thing in canon and exploring what might have happened differently as a result.

For the question: I would say not necessarily! Zombie AU could also be occurring during an apocalypse, or even pre-apocalypse as a herald of what's to come. A good example would be the game series Dead Rising-- the outbreaks are pretty localized and most of the world is still functioning as normal, but it's a notable enough thing that pharmaceutical companies are pushing/glamorizing a drug to combat the effects of zombification and there are gameshows revolving around mowing down as many zombies as you can lol.

Favorite AUs are definitely dependent on the canon and what I want from it, but I'm a sucker for a Battle Royale AU.

no. not even remotely. they can overlap though and often do but not inherently. but like my fandom was supernatural and you could add zombies without adding cataclysmic events pretty easily.

"what if" aus are comforting to me, but as long as the author is thoughtful i like most if not all of them.

See, I'd think if it was a "zombie AU" that means there is a significant amount of zombies.

i don't necessarily think so, i think zombies just have to be an accepted fairly common part of reality during the fic, but even so I don't think that would be automatically cataclysmic. in spn there are multiple types of undead anyway and so it wouldn't be anymore cataclysmic than the most seasons. in general, i think the apocalyptic-ness of zombie fic is wholly dependent on how the author has decided zombies exist. a zombie fic in the style of iZombie is pretty easy to do but not apocalyptic imo.

Not at all. You can have zombies without the apocalypse and vice versa. Some may think zombies are a subset of post-apocalypse, but I'm in a canon that is very much non-apocalyptic and it has zombies, so...

My favorite AUs are mafia, arranged marriage, royalty, certain types of soulmate AUs - really anything that increases the strictures on behavior that the characters would have to navigate.

No, they are not at all the same. Zombie AU specifically implies having zombies, post-apocalyptic implies the collapse of civilization which in narrative could lead to anything and everything with or without zombies.

I have a soft spot for gunslinger AUs.

No, though it could be. Often, zombies are the apocalypse. Sometimes they are the result of another cataclysmic event, and then they might be post-apocalyptic. It really depends on how many zombies and how they came about.

I love fusion AUs done well. You want your teen drama characters attending Hogwarts? Cool. You want your workplace sitcom characters in Starfleet? Awesome. You want that band you're into to be part of the SGC on Atlantis? Bring it on.

No. They can be subset of Apocalypse AU but not the same.

I prefer what ifs to classic AUs. In some fandoms I read occasional magic or post-ap AU or smth. But I actually hate them most of the time. I usually go for world building in fandoms. So AUs are exact opposite of what I like in fandom
