Book readers, what and how many genres do you read?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming you read more than one genre, that is. Do you prefer to stick with one or two genres, or do you enjoy a wide range? Are there genres you'd like to explore more? I'm curious about peoples' reading habits.

I read (almost exclusively) horror and non-fiction. Sometimes a thriller every now and then.

I read almost exclusively non-fiction, but when I do read fiction it has more to do with the actual story than the genre, if that makes sense. The last couple of fiction books I read were historical and then sci-fi. The next one on my list when I feel the urge for fiction is going to be a crime drama.

I mostly read non fiction but some fiction genres I like are mysteries, fantasy, humorous fiction and some horror.

Mostly biographies, erotic horror, and Tolkien-adjacent fantasy these days.

Low fantasy, urban fantasy, cosy fantasy (or cosy anything if the book passes the vibe check), romance (…only a few because I can’t find anything good and I hate Austen and that’s the only name anyone in fandom ever gives me), light horror/gothic mystery. Oh and historical fiction is another but I haven’t had that in my rotation since summer.
I also read some nonfiction, usually a biography here or there.

... I'm struggling to imagine how Jane Austen is the ONLY rec you get when you ask for romance recs. I enjoy her work, but when people say romance, I assume they mean something contemporary.

DA
yeah thats a weird one for sure. Maybe something in the way OP is asking? But romance is such a huge genre with plenty of popular authors, I just can't imagine only getting Austen as an answer.

AYRT

I ask in fandom spaces and there is HUGE chunk of fandom that think Austen is the greatest ever. It’s actually really weird to me because outside of fandom it’s rare to find anyone who likes her work. At most, someone might like one of the P&P movies.

And yes, I get recommended Austen even if I specify that I’m looking for contemporary books. Which doesn’t exactly help my dim view of Austen fanatics.

That is so strange lol. I am a huge Austen fan but will also be the first to say it feels like a very niche 'type' even within romance so it definitely wouldn't be the first thing I'd recommend even if someone asked for regency romance tbh, and I wouldn't even bring her up if you'd specifically asked for contemporary.

I reqd almost scifi and fantasy exclusively. I used to read romance but I haven't found one that gripped me in years so I think I'm out of that genre.

I also read a lot of books on child development, social anthropology, and parenting. But thats for work. Which I do enjoy, I just don't think Id read them as much if it weren't work related.

I'd love to read more historical fiction and more nonfiction in genereal, but they just haven't clicked for me.

Although I prefer sci-fi or fantasy, I tend to read pretty much anything that catches my interest because I can be pretty picky about the kind of sci-fi/fantasy depending on summary and if I can get into the first chapter alright.

I use to be in a pretty good LGBTQ book club where you just had to read anything queer related (themes and/or author), so I have read a ton of fiction and non-fiction in that realm. Last year I read a lot of queer musician autobiographies and a book covering the Section 28 law in the UK; in addition to a few YA fantasy and horror books that had sounded interesting and were ok.

Right now I'm reading a lesbian vampire romance (Love Bites by Ry Herman) and a really surreal book on someone getting into the K-Pop fandom (Y/N by Esther Yi).

Mainly fantasy and scifi with some horror that fit into one of those two thrown in.

I’ll read pretty much anything as long as it sounds interesting enough and I go through phases where I prefer certain genres over others. I was really into horror for a minute and now I’m into fluffy romances. I’d like to get into more fantasy and sci-fi. I have a harder time getting into those genres than others. I don’t know why, but they tend to feel “dry” to me.

I stick to one genre at a time. The trashiest most popcorn ladden tropes there is. For now it's OP protag isekai. It was LitRPG before.

I read science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, and thriller/crime/espionage/adventure. Sometimes random other stuff.

I read anything if it's good/fun/interesting to me-- my favorite genre is horror, but I read mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, thrillers, 'literary fiction', I read classics as much as I read new works. I read non-fiction-- essays, memoirs, books about science or about culture...

There are things I don't tend to read-- mainstream modern romance isn't my scene, but if a friend who knows what I like recommends a book that happens to be romance, then I'll give it a shot. (99% of the fanfic I consume is romance based on horror/fantasy/sci-fi/mystery properties so it's not that I'm anti-romance! But I like it when the romance is set against a backdrop where there's monsters or magic or murder, you know?)

Mostly fantasy, some sci-fi, some non-fiction, the occasional historical mystery, or horror, or romance fantasy.

Honestly I read almost everything but non-fiction and country. Cowboy? What is the genre for like... cowboys and horses? LOL

Not to say I never would, but tbf I don't see a ton of it around either. If there is it's usually coupled with something else, like space cowboy.

Also can someone tell me what literary fiction is as a genre? I don't know what it's supposed to mean.
