Speaking as another Brit: I think the fact that Mumsnet's founder was married to a top Guardian editor (who's also worked at the BBC and Channel 4) is probably a factor; the fact that the very small number of powerful lesbians in media have mostly gone TERF, which is totally unreflective of British lesbians en masse; and then there's the way New Atheism of the Dawkins variety seems to have sparked a whole transphobia-is-rational thing.

But honestly none of that seems enough, and it's very focused on individuals, which is usually a sign of an incorrect story ime. Idk.
