I would like some more context, as this is something I have not heard of anywhere (and I've been out and about fairly often along with being outside the country a few months ago).

Well, I'm glad it's just around me, then, although not glad I happened to wind up where it seems to be a thing. People here are on their socials writing Covid diaries and taking pictures of themselves to go along with it. I don't get it at all. They look the same as they always do!

I have to wonder if this is inspired by seeing some of the things that ended up on Sorry Antivaxxer (sorryantivaxxer.com). Some of the people who got serious cases ended up looking quite a bit different.

That site seems very weird and kind of ghoulish. I don't understand taking joy in people suffering, even if they're jerks or idiots.

From what I've seen, this schadenfreude is a mix of emotions. It's likely a mix of joy, relief, and anger. The people who are shown on the website actively sabotage not only their own health but the health of others. So while is somewhat ghoulish, I can also understand the appeal.
