It's great for big fandoms where your favorite may not be the main character. So the fics should at least focus on that character a bit.

It is really helpful for one of my ships because it will tell me what kind of fic it is. Since the ship is hero/villain, that tag tends to go along with more IC fics rather than full-on OOC fluff.
