I mean, they did coin the trope the Worf Effect with that particular subgenre of bad writing, after all. Why would they stop?

(I think it just falls under a broad category of amateurish writing in terms of telling too much and showing too little: we only ever hear people say that Stormtroopers have great aim, all we ever see is them aiming poorly. Nobody is going to believe words when boundless proof of the opposite is right in front of them.)

Maybe not an exact analogy, but this makes me think of self-insert "x Reader" fic. I've seen a few examples of new media coming out featuring a Hot Guy who's having a "moment" in the spotlight, and there's a flood of "Hot Guy x f!Reader" fic. In the early days, any fic like this gets tons of engagement, no matter how poorly written or unoriginal. Then after a certain amount of time most of the self-insert writers move on to chase the next hot guy, or to chase the same guy to a new project.

I once saw someone straight-up admit in author's notes that their only motivation to write the story was to cash in on the popularity of a certain Hot Guy, "before everyone moves on."

Don't we all OP, don't we all. *dreamy sigh*

Oh that is the worst. Especially when I think the characters I love must be the most popular, of course there will be all sorts of fic! And then....*crickets chirping* nothing.

If only I could write, but alas.

I could see that pipeline being pretty correct.

Oh man, and whenever I see it crop up in my fandom, it's like... just write an original romance story! PLEASE! Because the guy in this xReader fic is NOTHING like the character whose tag I'm in.

How dare you say we piss on the poor?

Just gonna slide 'Zutara' in here between Dramione and Reylo

I think there is, I don't see the connections as much because I don't usually flock to the ships that are the 'new thing', much in the same way I'm out of touch with MSF because I haven't had a slash ship that's been hit with that fandom-base in years. But I 100% bet that there's an equivalent that flocks from chosen het-ship to het-ship, likely because of the male character involved.

What's the migratory slash fandom?

Based On Secret 4 - The Worf Effect - Favourite Subversions/Least Favourite Examples?

I've noticed how common this is in shounen, and given how long the anime section is for this trope, that assessment feels justified. Given that, I have to give absolute mad props to Gege Akutami because when he says someone is badass in JJK they tend to be exactly that in every fight. Double mad props for Sukuna; eventually, Big Bads tend to serve as a prop to show heroic growth, or just end up beat down all around like Sasuke but nope nope nope somehow this ancient terrible god-like curse actually is as terrifying as he is described in this show for preteen boys.

Come to think of it, I'd say Farscape does a pretty decent job with giving both D'Argo and Aeryn, who would be the most obvious choices to Worf, both some losses and some big wins based on their particular skillsets throughout the series right up to the end.
