Maybe not an exact analogy, but this makes me think of self-insert "x Reader" fic. I've seen a few examples of new media coming out featuring a Hot Guy who's having a "moment" in the spotlight, and there's a flood of "Hot Guy x f!Reader" fic. In the early days, any fic like this gets tons of engagement, no matter how poorly written or unoriginal. Then after a certain amount of time most of the self-insert writers move on to chase the next hot guy, or to chase the same guy to a new project.

I once saw someone straight-up admit in author's notes that their only motivation to write the story was to cash in on the popularity of a certain Hot Guy, "before everyone moves on."

I think there is, I don't see the connections as much because I don't usually flock to the ships that are the 'new thing', much in the same way I'm out of touch with MSF because I haven't had a slash ship that's been hit with that fandom-base in years. But I 100% bet that there's an equivalent that flocks from chosen het-ship to het-ship, likely because of the male character involved.

I don't know whether or not it's migratory. But there's definitely a Generic DFP Het type of fandom that looks extremely similar in many, many different fandoms.

Not sure I agree with migratory? Dramione and Reylo have had staying power. But yeah, there are relatively few female heroine/male Villain ships that I guess it could seem like a pipeline.

As a Christine/Erik shipper from way back, this is definitely a thing, but just like with the MSF it's not as straight(pun not intended)forward as all problematic hetship fans moving in lockstep from one fandom to the next.

Lots of Christine/Phantom shippers probably were Jareth/Sarah and or Catherine/Vincent shippers at some point, and became Hermione/Snape or Hermione/Draco shippers became Buffy/Spike or Buffy/Angel shippers became Edward/Bella shippers became Loki/Darcy or Loki/OFC shippers became Belle/Rumpelstiltskin or Emma/Hook shippers became Reylo shippers became Darklina shippers and idek what they're into these days. Whoever the main characters are in ACOTAR or Fourth Wing?

Of those the only other pairing aside from Christine/the Phantom that I ship is Belle/Rumpelstiltskin, and two of the others are my only NOTPs. And I didn't get Twilight, bounced really, really hard off ACOTAR, and Fourth Wing was blah.

I read some Remus/Sirius and Nite Owl/Rorschach back in the day, but never got hugely into either, there weren't enough Mulan/Aurora or Mulan/Aurora/Philip fics or fans for me to get super into them even though I liked the idea, and I love the idea of Abbie Mills/Emma Swan even more but nobody ever wrote any.

My current OTP is Morpheus/Hob Gadling from The Sandman, and it's interesting seeing the mix of comic fans from way back who only started shipping them when the show aired (raises hand), and new fans who I guess could be described as MSF, although some comics fans are primarily into m/m fic, too.

I'm not big into f/f, but I'm hoping Hazel/Foxglove and Wanda/Barbie get a popularity boost if the show gets that far.

Most of the Hob/Dream fans who are primarily into m/m fic and fandoms are or were into Hannibal, The Witcher, Supernatural, OMFD, Good Omens, TMA, The Hobbit... idk, lots of shows. But I haven't seen anyone into all of them, any more than I've seen migratory villain/dark hetshippers into all the pairings I listed. And Dream/Hob fans seem way more into writing characters as trans, especially as t4t, than in the het fandoms I'm into, even though I think there's almost as many LGBT+ fans in those het fandoms and transphobic bigotry gets shut down hard pretty much everywhere.

And not all those hetshippers are into the, I guess, Dark Fuck Prince (is that synonymous with Draco in Leather Pants?) versions of the male half of those m/f ships, or fainting damsel (or kickass Strong Female Character) stereotypes versions of female characters, any more than all m/m fans love the kind of mass produced, extruded slash product, Strong Stoic Man/small soft guy fic that people who whine about MSF accuse them of writing.

Generic, stereotype-riddled romance writing, and writing in general, knows no sex or gender, of writers, readers, or characters depicted in it. Yeah, I know it's popular even though I think it's boring, but luckily it's not the only kind of fic there is.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

[personal profile] queenslayerbee 2024-01-12 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not particularly into these ships, and I do agree that there's an element of migration/repetition (often characterization is reduced to some few tropes that might not really fit the original characters and mimicked from fandom to fandom), but I think it doesn't go as far as the migratory slash fandom. Those ships have way less in common than the ones you cite lol; these het shippers could easily argue they simply gravitate towards certain type (ymmv), but some slash shippers really seem to jump from one popular white guy/white guy ship to another regardless of what their personalities or canon dynamics are like. Are they lifelong friends, borderline soulmates? Are they intense rivals or mortal enemies? Did they have like two scenes where they mildly annoyed each other? The results are often the same.

I mean, they did coin the trope the Worf Effect with that particular subgenre of bad writing, after all. Why would they stop?

(I think it just falls under a broad category of amateurish writing in terms of telling too much and showing too little: we only ever hear people say that Stormtroopers have great aim, all we ever see is them aiming poorly. Nobody is going to believe words when boundless proof of the opposite is right in front of them.)

Based On Secret 4 - The Worf Effect - Favourite Subversions/Least Favourite Examples?

[personal profile] ariakas 2024-01-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed how common this is in shounen, and given how long the anime section is for this trope, that assessment feels justified. Given that, I have to give absolute mad props to Gege Akutami because when he says someone is badass in JJK they tend to be exactly that in every fight. Double mad props for Sukuna; eventually, Big Bads tend to serve as a prop to show heroic growth, or just end up beat down all around like Sasuke but nope nope nope somehow this ancient terrible god-like curse actually is as terrifying as he is described in this show for preteen boys.

Come to think of it, I'd say Farscape does a pretty decent job with giving both D'Argo and Aeryn, who would be the most obvious choices to Worf, both some losses and some big wins based on their particular skillsets throughout the series right up to the end.
