Re: For some reason I felt the need to write an essay on this
(Anonymous) 2024-01-12 09:44 am (UTC)(link)I don't think you need reccers and manifestos or multiple generations of fans sharing the slash -- all you need is highly popular shows that get a lot of "buzz" and people talking about it all the time and sharing gifsets, and then there's a certain kind of longfic slash writer or talented artist who will show up and start writing/drawing art in the hot new fandom and getting thousands of kudos for it if they ride the wave right.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-12 09:46 am (UTC)(link)Oh wait... WangXian and Victuuri *definitely* aren't white guys but they are very pretty. I don't think it makes much of a difference when it comes to Migratory Slash Fandom, though. Those pairings are still very much part of the phenomenon.
Re: For some reason I felt the need to write an essay on this
(Anonymous) 2024-01-12 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)I take your point that MSF isn't dead. I would still say it's fragmented though, in the way TV viewership has fragmented with streaming.
I feel like in the early naughts the pipelines you've identified would have been smaller links coming off a main juggernaut slash pairing, like Stile/Derek. And do now we might have the smaller links floating around, but there isn't a new juggernaut slash pairing to join it all together like the centre circle in a venn diagram - or, to bring it back to the TV analogy, that one 'water cooler' show that everyone watched. Now we have mini eater cooler show moments, but it's hard to have a widescalec cultural phenomenom show when everyone is subscribed to different streaming platforms. (Not that any of these changes are bad things, just changes).
