Eh, to me a rub feels more invasive and intimate than a pat, but if it were up to me, I'd prefer a cup of tea as comfort, not physical touch.

Oh man, same. I'd be super weirded out by anyone rubbing my back unless it was someone I knew extremely well where doing that sort of thing would be okay.

But a back pat? That's innocuous, a relative stranger could do that and it would be fine.
