The snow has arrived!

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I know for some snow is not a good thing (Texans, how you holding up?) but I am pretty excited. Only an inch or so but still more than we got all last year! It will probably be gone by morning so I am enjoying the pretty fluffy flakes as they fall in the moment.

How's the weather where you are?

Man, same, sort of. I don't hope they flop, but i just don't CARE anymore. CA:TWS was the last movie i really, really enjoyed....

I'm admittedly only peripherally aware of her and the family she married into, though I do live in Oklahoma. But yeah, if my grandpa or great-grandpa stole land from people and is now a millionaire because of it, that hits a lot closer to home than slavery. It's almost within living memory, if not the event itself, than the people who did those things are people that someone living today remembers.

I have a love/hate relationship with special editions. They are beautiful and I want them, but I also want all my books in a series or by an author to match and special editions are generally different sizes than the regular editions and it drives me bonkers!

But yeah, the special chapters bit is just mean.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh I didn't know about the controversy much until this secret, but there's a world of difference between someone who acknowledges their ancestors did some very fucked up shit Vs. Her schtick of being proud of her family(her husband's) heritage and branding herself as a "simple country woman" despite being married in to one of the richest most powerful families in Oklahoma.

If there is anything to dislike personally about pioneer woman (even without any of her own very terrible comments) is that she portrays herself as a working class mother when she's very much so in an extremely wealthy place of privilege.

Her family (the Drummonds) still owns large swathes of Osage land, were "guardians" of reputedly 10 Osage adults and children and are still actively profiting from that land. They apparently even promoted the fact that pioneer woman businesses are near where the Scorsese film was shot when the movie came out. Ofc not mentioning the role that family had as one of the "Killers of the flower moon".

Sure it hits close to home, but it's kind of weird to ask great-grandkids to be guilty of their relatives crimes. Sure most people feel bad and you don't repeat them, but to hold them accountable for relatives actions generations before them is a bit much.

However I do think in this case the family has continued to be kind of assholes and profit so yeah, it's complicated.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agreed, and let's add authors who put their bonus chapters on Patreon to the mix as well.

The sun came out today and melted some of the ice from Saturday, so we managed to make it to the store before the next ice storm hits tomorrow. Would rather have snow instead...

We got a little snow, but the drive to work was actually okay. I'm really worried about tomorrow afternoon into Wednesday. It is supposed to warm up and then freeze again. Which means black ice. Can't take a vacation day Wednesday because I have court.

Also, the weather changes and the repeated going from freezing cold to indoor dry heat has triggered a bad migraine.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really see racism in the deleted blogpost? I'm probably missing something though?

Ugh though her at her writing style. It is just that too cutesy snark that all those 'housewife'/mommyblogs had for awhile there. I never cared for it.

I am either blessed or cursed with the forecast that makes the precipitation go away before the temperature drops below freezing. Like, literally every day precipitation and cold temps are involved. I guess some might appreciate that on the road though.

Would anyone be interested in a low key writing challenge?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking maybe a week long challenge, starting with just really low word counts and eeking our way up. Like day one: write 50 words. That's it, just 50 words of anything at all. Just a small low pressure challenge to help get back into the habit of writing regularly for those of us that maybe have built up the anxiety or let the writing muscles whither away for too long.

I was thinking of maybe making a little private discord server for it if anyone would be interested?
philstar22: (Tolkien: One Ring)

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-01-16 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
It depends. If it has been deliberately withheld, then yes. But previously unpublished things from authors who have passed? That can be nice. I love getting all the different versions of Tolkien's stories that he wrote along the way. I will happily buy every edition and every new thing published from his stuff.

Ice storms are the worst. I do not miss those at all.

nayrt

Well, she calls the natives both "Indians" and "shrewd little boogers" but make of that what you will.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Gross that [profile] thepioneerwoman calls Natives (or, her word for us, "Indians") "shrewd little boogers" for maintaining our mineral rights in a 2006 post now scrubbed from her blog. "
^ down below prior screenshots by the twitter user

"Now the Indian tribe in our area owned the entire county until 1906, when the tribe then alloted it to individual tribal members, who were then free to sell their parcels. The tribe, however, retained the mineral rights (oil ownership) to all the land. (Shrewd little boogers, weren't they?) It was a very good ranching country and since none of those Indian [members?] had no interest in working the land themselves, this was a prime opportunity for one to..."

^ this is written by the woman herself. Again, not acknowledging that that family more or less swindled it from the Osage people and again, all heresay online, still own the headrights sold from a white man who married an Osage woman explicitly for her land.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Man, all I know about this lady is that there are a couple of people here who really hater her, and the few times I've caught a couple of minutes of her show it has seemed like she's both desperately lonely and a little bit stoned.

I’m in the south and it’s been snowing literally nonstop for 25 hours. NWS has our official snowfall at 11” but I’m on higher ground and we’ve got 13” on our back deck. The forecast was for 4-6” which everyone took to mean 1-3” that will disappear before sundown. Kroger closed at 5, Walmart at 8. Even Dollar General closed! All three DGs in the town limits closed between 4 and 6. School has been cancelled for the week, which may not sound like a big deal to some but around here that’s unprecedented. We have salt trucks and an independent school district so they don’t close. Last winter there was a storm and every school district in the state was closed except ours. How people are going to financially survive this week is beyond me, we have a lot of people living in poverty. Businesses and schools closed means no money coming in, higher expenses, and not enough food.

I’m interested!

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
+1, I do buy books to support authors, but I then also pirate editions with extra content because they're just not available in my country. I also pirate them after buying if they're only readable in one dumb format in one particular viewer. This has served me well as format after format has died and books just vanish.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I’ve been watching cdramas for a loooooong time and it’s staggering how badly the quality has dropped in the last 15 or so years. The modern dramas have always been dogshit imo, but you could usually count on the costume dramas being good or fun to watch but now even those are extremely hit or miss. It used to be that I could find several shows to watch in a year and now I struggle to find one that’s worth my time. It’s sad to see how bad the industry has gotten. :/

Yay! I'm off to bed but I'll check back in here tomorrow to see if we get anyone else interested. If I end up making a discord server I'll post a link on tomorrow's FS post!

Emmys tonight.

I haven't watched any of these shows, none of them, so I'm not watching the awards. But I do like the fashion polls that come out after every big red carpet, so there's that. Inevitably, there will be a best list that I will only agree with three out of the ten and I will wonder, yet again, why it's fashionable for men to wear trousers that are too long (if somebody knows or if somebody really likes the bunching at the ankles, can you please tell me why?).

6 degrees here, 'feels like' -5 (-14/fl -20), with snow showers. We probably have about an inch of snow, but those have been the temps for the last few days. High yesterday was 4.

My car had to get jumped, the cold just zapped the battery. I put out extra seeds for my yard birbs.

Also, my internet keeps going out. *sigh*
