I don't think Donald Glover is interested in doing sitcoms at this point unfortunately. Which sucks because IMO that's what he's the best at.

I would love this. I agree they had great chemistry, and both had a really great physical level to their comedy as well.

I feel like I read somewhere at some point that Donald Glover didn't want to do sitcom comedy anymore? Like he had a bad experience or something. Which is a crying shame because he is so good at it.

It seems like he wants to be an artist with serious things to say and also an international playboy.

I could see that. It's a shame that some people don't consider comedy as seriously or as much work as drama or as an actual artform. I definitely think it takes just as much talent and not a skill all actors have.

most of his media work is comedic, it's just not situational and is sometimes very pointed. atlanta is a straight satire. swarm is a comedy thriller. i think mr. and mrs. smith is probably more on the comedic side of dramedy as well. he's def the comedic beat as lando. stuff that isn't comedic is not really drama, like voicing miles morales or simba.

I agree a lot of his work is still comedic but in a different way. It's elevated comedy. I wouldn't call Atlanta straight satire - I don't know what the right word for it is but I would put it in the same class as a show like Louie (only comparing in terms of genre, not in terms of Louis CK being a piece of shit obviously). I haven't seen Swarm but based on what people say about it it sounds very in the realm of elevated horror. And Mr & Mrs Smith seems like a comedy but one where Glover is playing a badass deadly sexy cool superspy.

And to be clear none of that's bad. If that's what he wants to do, good for him. Whether it's what I want to see from him doesn't matter a lick. But I do think it points in a very different direction than funnyman whose main goal is to get a laugh.

atlanta is literally satire like definitionally. it's straight from the satyricon. it's menippean in purpose and structure. i also can't imagine watching it and thinking "this man's goal isn't to get a laugh". I haven't seen louie so i can't comment there. swarm is a horror-comedy.

my point is really that the idea that he "doesn't consider comedy as seriously or as much work as drama or as an actual artform" is misplaced at best.

As someone who doesn't enjoy sitcoms I am glad for it. Comedy is hard but also it's a lot of different genres

yeah I really love sitcoms, but i also love how comedy is developing as a genre and i think stuff like atlanta is very much about taking comedy seriously.

Oh I didnt know that! Although I would say certain types of comedy, like satire, are generally seen as more 'serious' forms of art than straight up physical or sitcom style comedy so it still kind of makes sense in relation to other anons idea that he wants to be taken as a serious artist.

I like it in Danny Pudi's interview with Larry King when he says: "Larry? I'm on DuckTales!" The comedic delivery is excellent.
