When was the last time you had a horrible dream?

I had such a bad dream last night I woke up sobbing. And I can't even talk about it because every time I do, I tear up.

Night before last, I had two dreams about my mother dying during the 2 hours of sleep I got. Yay, migraine-induced nightmares and sleeplessness.

Oh I'm sorry. I hate ones like that, where the intense feelings from the dream lingers.

I have unsettling dreams pretty often. Nothing where I wake up sobbing, but dreams where I wake up angry or unsettled or in a panic. I have a recurring dream where a baby is falling and I have to jump over something to catch them, and I'll often wake up as I'm literally jumping out of bed and stand their panicked and confused until I fully wake.

I have a lot of anxious and unpleasant dreams, but few horrible dreams

The standard "horrible" dreams I have are about being in school and forgetting a big test or essay that I have no time to study for/write, and I have those pretty often. But the last dream that really upset me so much it haunted me for days was a couple years ago. I dreamed my house was on fire (not the real place I live IRL, but one unique to the dream that was secluded in the woods) and I was emotionally compelled to keep going back in to save all my things, even though I knew I should leave them and run.

I regularly got stress dreams until about a month ago when I started taking melatonin. They were either:
I'm going to school, but I've forgotten my schedule and for various reasons (ice/flood/lost/locked out/too far away/etcetc) I can't get to the registrar to get a new copy of my schedule.
OR
I'm moving house/leaving a hotel room and I need to pack, and every time I get everything stuffed into a very full bag, I find new things that need to be packed. A new bag appears and as soon as I get all the new stuff packed into a very full bag, I find new things that need to be packed. Wash, rinse, repeat until I wake up.

It's been years since I've had an actual nightmare.

Yesterday. I was in the spare bedroom giving the feral cat some company and was sleepy from the heat (we have it warmer in there for her than the rest of the house) so I ended up napping since she was cuddled against me. I had a bad dream about this weeks weather and my family and getting fired. I can still see some of the dream if I close my eyes :(

Back in 2022, my younger sister was in a really bad car accident, and I had to do some... "networking" is a bad term for it, but I had to call a lot of our family and her friends to let them know what was going on and be the point person for updates. My sister has made a near-full recovery by now and seems to be doing a lot better, but I had a dream last week that she didn't survive the accident and I had to make all those calls but telling people that she died. It seemed so realistic, and I was really disoriented when I woke up. (Did also definitely have a video call with her that afternoon.) Had a dream a few days later that featured a bunch of dead animals, which was also fun and bizarre.

Three nights ago I dreamed I was back at my mother's old appartment and there were noises and bits of the ceiling kept falling apart & down until a freaking huge rat fell down too through the holes it was making and with reflexes real!me would never have, dream!me STOMPED on the live rat with a plimsoll-clad foot
it didn't kill the rat but pinned it down squirming under my flimsy sole and
yuck
that when I woke up with a disgusted jolt.
Far from the worst nightmare I've ever had but--the most recent.
