Something similar to Pratchett and Woodhouse. A dialogue that makes you reread it.

The top goodreads revie for his top book: The dialogue is beyond irritating, pages and pages of dialogue where no one actually says anything.

Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey series. An Age of Sail series; it's like Hornblower meets Jane Austen in style and theme. It doesn't really hit stride until the third book in the series of twenty or so - "HMS Surprise" which is actually not a bad place to start.

I was in the fandom for some time but I've never managed to finish the books. Somehow it felt too gritty. So it was the movie for me. I'll try HMS Surprise, ty!
